Bell Work /15/18 Come in quickly and quietly! Answer the following question in the bell work section of you binder: 1. What does the G.R.A.P.E.S category of Religion mean? (Check page 4 of your binder)

-Success Criteria: I can define religion. I can describe the difference between monotheism and polytheism. I list and describe at least 2 of the 5 major religions.

3 Introduction to Religion

4 What is Religion? -Religion is an organized system of beliefs, ceremonies, and rules used to worship a god or a group of gods.

5 Origins of Religion Where do we come from? Who created this?
Why does the sun disappear? -Thousands of years ago, humans lived in isolated groups. -They depended on their environment to live (hunting & gathering). -Spiritual beliefs existed as a way to explain the unexplainable. -The natural world and all of its wonders. Who created this? Where do we come from?

7 Polytheism VS. Monotheism
The belief in multiple Gods. Gods have limited power (air, sun, sea, etc.) ex-Posiden Historically, the oldest forms of belief. Examples: -Ancient Egypt -Greece & Rome -Hinduism The belief in only one God. The one God is all powerful. A more modern type of religion. Examples: -Judaism -Christianity -Islam

Hinduism- 800 million Followers are called “Hindu” Buddhism- 350 million Followers are called “Buddhist” Judaism- 14 million Followers are called “Jewish” Christianity- 2 Billion Followers are called “Christian” Islam- 1 Billion Followers are called “Muslim”

9 Hinduism Hinduism is considered the oldest religion in the world.
It is the dominant religion of India. It has no historical founder. Tolerance & Diversity- “Truth is one, paths are many.” Both a philosophy and way of life.

10 Buddhism Founded by a Prince Siddhartha Gautama who gave up everything to become “enlightened” Buddhism is the widespread religion in China, Thailand, and Japan. They worship through meditation and study Buddha’s teachings.

11 Judaism Jewish people are monotheistic, they believe in one God.
God spoke to Abraham and promised to look after the Israelites if they obeyed him. Laws were written down in the Torah. The Jewish place of worship is called a Synagogue.

12 Christianity Christianity was founded around 33 AD.
Known as the largest religion in the world with 2 billion followers. Christianity is based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Sacred text: The Bible which has the old and new testaments.

13 Islam Monotheistic religion 2nd largest religion in the world.
Founded by the Prophet Muhammad in the 7th century. Muslims worship at Mosques.
