Emotional awareness of feelings Teaching strategies: Attend to children’s emotional states Accept children’s full range of emotions Label children’s emotions and your own with simple words Point out that other’s have feelings too Comment conversationally on the emotions you observe children expressing Plan small group activities that focus on feelings Discuss with families children’s need to express and label feelings appropriately

Teaching Strategies: Promote interaction through use of space and materials Create opportunities for collaborative interaction Allow children to discover the consequences of their actions Model cooperative play by partnering with children When possible, share control in the classroom in other ways, too. Teaching strategies: Establish a safe classroom Convey calmness Soothe children who are upset Observe children’s behavior while mediating conflict-remain neutral Develop solutions together with children Help children reflect on problem-solving strategies they are learning at times other than during conflict

Morality is a system for evaluating human conduct. Teaching strategies: Be consistent and fair-minded Verbalize in simple terms the reasons for your actions and decisions that involve moral matters Work with children’s families to achieve congruency

Activity: Conflict Resolution Role-Play
In small groups, review the Six Steps of Conflict Resolution on page 61. As a group, come up with a skeet about a preschool conflict. Each group member should have a part in the skit. Role-play using the Six Steps of Conflict Resolution
