Demand side measures Ways to include diets in land use NDCs
Dr. Katalin Solymosi June 2019

The agri value chain Something missing?
6
Most of our diets are not ideal
Healthy (high nutritional value) Win-lose diet „affluent urban diet“ Win-win diet climate-smart nutrition Lose-lose diet „fast food diet“ Lose-win diet „rural poor diet“ Good for the planet (low environmental footprint)

They deliver untapped adaptation and mitigation benefits
Why include demand side measures in agri policies … and NDCs! They deliver untapped adaptation and mitigation benefits They allow for a holistic planning in the agri sector to meet SDGs They are an entry point for the private sector Verbally add if time allows: The current global population experiences 3 forms of malnutrition in large numbers: 820 million people undernourished 2 billion people micronutrient deficient 2.1 billion adults overweight Global population growth increases the challenge. Climate change increases the challenge through a negative impact on food production. The current global food system (production + consumption) does not operate in a way to solve the challenge. A large scale transition is needed involving all stages of global food supply chains. Interventions at production AND consumption stage are needed and should be designed in an interlinked way. Production: climate-smart agriculture, sustainable intensification, adaptation and mitigation along the entire value chain Consumption: „demand side measures“, i.e. reducing food loss and waste, nutrition shift Outcomes: Better nutrition status More climate resilience Less GHG emissions
