My presentation seeks to discuss the potential challenges and opportunities that KenGen might face while in the process of adopting the new Kenya National Transmission Grid Code (KNTGC) and the Kenya National Distribution Code (KNDC) for the operation and maintenance of Kenya’s electric power generation, transmission, and distribution systems.

The Codes has already been approved by ERC commissioners and awaits gazettement even as various participants are being assessed to confirm their readiness for the enforcement

Understanding the Grid Code
is a set of documents that legally establishes technical and operational requirements for the connection to and use of an electrical system in a manner that will ensure reliable, efficient and safe operation,
The Grid code has been split into two; Kenya National Transmission Grid Code (KNTGC) and Kenya National Distribution Code (KNDC).

Currently, the revised Grid Code is in the process of being operationalized and ERC requires each utility to carry out the following:-
Acquaint with the revised Grid code (Transmission and Distribution) to know the requirements
Self-Assessment to the requirements of the revised codes;

b) To seek derogations-by 31st may 2017

Conclusion
KenGen As the market leaders in Power Generators, should principally assist in defining the rules by which safe and efficient system of electricity generation, transmission, distribution and supply should be established and maintained subsequently living up to its vision of producing Electricity which is efficient, cost-effective and competitive in the industry.
The two Grid Code standards once operationalized shall play a major role in the successful penetration of renewable and conventional energies in the power grid.
The benefits of the Code is inline with KenGen’s Horizon II and G2G Transformation strategy.
Improvement of the PPA’s and Tariff regulation, optimization of future plants and guarantee high returns of the current plants.
Ancillary services is an avenue for KenGen to start demanding compensation by Kenya Power.
