1 The R&I objectives of the forest-based sector in Europe Johan Elvnert, Managing Director Forest-based Sector Technology Platform SCAR Workshop: Transnational cooperation in research and innovation for the European forest- based sector 5 February 2019, Brussels

2 FTP structure FTP Owners European Confederations
EFI FTP Owners European Confederations Woodworking Industries Pulp & Paper Industries Private Forest Owners State Forests Research Umbrella Organisations Supporting Large Companies FTP Board FTP Management 25 National Stakeholder Platforms SME Associations, National Federations, Companies, Forest owners, Funding Agencies, Researchers Advisory Committee (Chairs of the National Support Groups) Repeat some slides shown in the morning to level our conversation. Translate this need of better integration in one of the objectives of the communications activities.

3 Centre of European policy making

4 Many political goals, visions and targets

5 Unique forest-sector challenges to Long-term competitiveness
Wood is a highly complex, heterogeneous material (Mis)perceptions of citizens, consumers and society Rural business (difficult to attract young people, customers far away) Capital-intensive industry (investments need to last for decades) Large RM collection areas and fragmented forest ownership Long regeneration periods (our actions visible to our grandchildren) Influence of climate and biotic disturbances (storms, drought, fire, pests) Policy and legislaiton on forests on the national/regional level Changing global markets and products

6 Drivers to long-term competitiveness
Strengthen cooperation along the forest-based value-chain Encourage innovative SMEs in connection to major production facilities Invent new, value-added services connected to traditional products Support the base of the value-chain: forestry workers and contractors Attract the imagination and interest of young people Make use of the open-skies advantage (remote sensing, drones…) Be an early adaptor of digital technologies and the IoT Logistical excellence and resource efficiency Life-long learning, education and training

7 FTP Vision and Strategic Research Agenda
Launched 2005 SRA 2020 Launched 2006 Revised Vision 2030 2012/2013 Revised SRA 2020 2013 Vision 2040 2018 SRA 2030 To be launched 2019 UN SDGs Vision Targets 2040 How to reach the Vision Targets by 2040

8 10 Vision Targets; VT2 & VT8 Increased, sustainable wood production and mobilization Forest growth is increasing, leading to increased CO2 sequestration. Management practices are being further optimized for even higher productivity and stand quality. The creation of climate change-resilient and stress-tolerant forests is particularly important. Research, innovation and careful, long-term forest management have increased harvesting possibilities in Europe by 30 per cent, between now and 2040 Renewable building materials for healthier living Wood, the most commonly used renewable construction material in the world, has a bright future. In 2040, biobased construction in Europe has tripled its market share from the 2015 level, whilst the overall added value of the woodworking industries has doubled. Increased value will come from new products and services, as well as more widespread use of energy-saving, modular and flexible housing structures and functional furniture.

9 EU RTI-funding to the forest-based sector over time as a key performance indicator for the FTP Vision

10 Forests - a resource for human creativity
We propose that policymakers, Member States’ administrations and the stakeholders of the forest-based sector, together, contribute to achieving the FTP Vision 2040 © Södra Skogsägarna / Sjöbo, Åsenhöga.
