IBM Software Banking E.SUN Bank – Boosts customer engagement with advanced Internet services Cuts costs for maintenance and operations, floor space, and software licensing Supports high volumes such as the peak capacity of deposits after the Chinese Lunar New Year holiday The transformation: E.SUN Bank faces competition not only from other banks but also from new players in the marketplace, such as convenience stores and mobile payment services. To keep up, the bank needed a new Internet banking platform. The bank worked with IBM to create a robust, scalable platform for its Internet banking services using IBM® WebSphere® Application Server for z/OS® software. Provides a stable and security-rich platform that can support future growth and innovation Client name: E.SUN Bank Case study link: Quote: E.SUN Bank has gained a robust, scalable platform for its Internet banking services. “We are very familiar with the mainframe platform. IT investments must be lined up with company policy, and since we require Mercedes Benz–like online banking security and stability, the mainframe is a very reasonable choice,” says Wanli Hsieh, chief information officer (CIO) at E.SUN Bank. Company background: E.SUN Bank is a leader in virtual channels and e-commerce in the banking industry in Taiwan. In 1996, the bank established the first Internet banking system in the country to provide online banking services. More recently, it became the first bank to provide third-party payment services in collaboration with leading providers OuFuBao, 8591 and Alipay, and it established an exclusive partnership with one of the world’s largest online payment businesses, PayPal. Solution components: Software • IBM® WebSphere® Application Server for z/OS® Servers • IBM System z® Business challenge: Users’ expectations for financial services have evolved, driven by the Internet and the availability of mobile devices. The banking marketplace has also shifted dramatically. E.SUN Bank now faces competition not only from other banks but also from new players in the marketplace, such as convenience stores and mobile payment services. Therefore, in 2012, E.SUN Bank decided to create a new Internet banking platform. Benefits: E.SUN Bank performed an assessment on the total cost of ownership (TCO) of the IBM® System z® solution for 3 – 5 years. The bank determined that the mainframe has fewer security risks plus reduced costs for maintenance and operations, floor space, and software licensing. After the system went live, it successfully passed the real-life stress test of the peak volume of deposits after the Chinese Lunar New Year holiday. “The final outcome is that we reached the target established in the POC [proof of concept] and completed the project on schedule.” —Wanli Hsieh, chief information officer, E.SUN Bank Solution components Software IBM® WebSphere® Application Server for z/OS® Servers IBM System z® WSP14774-USEN-00 1
