2. . Go to the bookstore and get a copy of The Shallows – What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains. Part of your homework for tonight will be to read the first two chapters by Monday and write a brief summary (1-2 paragraphs) for each chapter.

3. Critical Thinking
You have three minutes to answer the following question. You may not talk to anyone during the three minutes. Write your answer on a piece of paper and turn it in if you think you are correct. If you get it right, I will award bonus points. If your first try is incorrect, you may try again until the three minutes has expired. Be sure that your explanation is clear – if the way you have it written doesn’t make sense, it doesn’t count.

4. You are standing outside a basement door; down the stairs, there are three light bulbs.  Next to you are three switches. You cannot see the lights from upstairs, and you must decide which switch controls which light bulb by going downstairs once.  How do you do this?

Answer: Turn on first switch, leave it on for a few minutes. Then turn it off and flip second switch. When you go into the basement, the first switch is the bulb that is off, but hot. The second switch is the bulb that's on. The third switch is the bulb that's cold and off.
