Why the shift from romanticism to realism? Characteristics of realism? (the name? I told you, history is hard) Photographers Capture Reality Daguerreotypes, the first practical form of photography Talbot’s light sensitive paper allows photos to be reproduced where? Significance? Writers Study Society How was society portrayed by writers like Zola and Dickens? ( )

10 Realism-Writing Depicted actual events in life that would allow more details to be revealed. Charles Dickens Described London’s working poor. Emile Zola Novels exposed miseries of French workers in small shops, factories, and coal mines. Shock readers and sparked reforms of labor laws in France

11 Realism Mid 19th century was affected by rapid industrialization.
Growing class of industrial workers lived grim lives in dirty, crowded cities. Industrialization made romantic dreams pointless. In literature and visual arts, realism showed life as it was, not as it should be.

12 Realism- Photography Technological advancements allowed for mass distribution of photos that gained a wide audience.

13 Impressionists React Against Realism
Life in the Moment Positive view of society in western Europe Composers used atmosphere and mood to help the listener draw mental pictures Significant changes occur to art, literature and music after industrialization?

14 Impressionism Beginning in the 1860s, painters in Paris reacted to the realist style. Tried to show their impression of a subject or moment in time. Used pure, shimmering colors to capture a moment seen at a glance.

15 Impressionism-Music Composers used different combinations of instruments, tone patterns, and music structures to make listens feel the mood. Ex: feel a warm summer day, or the sight of the sea Composers- Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy

16 8.4 Daily Questions Which ideas of romanticism would encourage nationalism, why? Who were the villains and who were the heroes of realist art and literature? Is impressionism more like realism or romanticism?

17 Free Writing Activity Write nonstop for 5 minutes.
Do not make corrections as you write. Keep writing, even if you have to write something like, "I don't know what to write." Write whatever comes into your mind. One side of your paper should be about romanticism the other side should be about realism.
