GAS BOTTLES Prepare and monitor anaesthesia in animals GAS BOTTLES
3
Gases Used Commonly –O 2 –N 2 O Less commonly –CO 2 –Medical Air
4
GAS BOTTLES How full is the bottle? N 2 O gauge is deceptive (since pressure constant until fully empty)
5
GAS BOTTLES Bottle Hazards Falling of unsecured cylinders may lead to: –Direct injury of personnel. –Explosive decompression if the valve breaks off, which will turn the cylinder into a lethal projectile –These hazards mandate that all cylinders be secured to a wall or placed on special carts. Fires and explosions may be caused by the oxidizing ability of oxygen and nitrous oxide: no grease must used in the threads of the valves or connectors. Incorrect identification of the contents of cylinders is a potential hazard.

Preventing wrong connections For small cylinders –Special pin placements on connecting yoke For large cylinders –Differing screw diameters
11
GAS BOTTLES Regulators Bottle pressure Output pressure
12
GAS BOTTLES Regulators – 2 functions 1.Maintain constant pressure in outflow line (i.e. regulate pressure) 2.Show pressure in tank (+/- outflow line) –+/- show pressure in line (models with a second gauge)
13
GAS BOTTLES Regulator Converts high cylinder (up to 2000 psi) pressure to a safer hose pressure (50-55 psi) –Keeps a steady flow as pressure in bottle drops
14
GAS BOTTLES Connecting to Cylinders Attach regulator
15
GAS BOTTLES FYI – Some Conversions 50 psi = 345 kPa 2,000 psi = 13,790 kPa (1 psi = 6.8947573 kPa)
16
GAS BOTTLES Connecting to Cylinders
17
GAS BOTTLES Connecting to Cylinders 1.Tightened by hand 2. Then tap opened
18
GAS BOTTLES Opening tap Never open tap / hosewheel unless regulator is connected Either –2 full turns, or –Fully open, then turn back ½ rotation
19
GAS BOTTLES When connecting O 2 cylinder… No naked flames (no smoking) No grease/oil on connections
20
GAS BOTTLES When bottle empty… Leave some oxygen in bottle –Reduces moisture entering
21
GAS BOTTLES Moving cylinder Use trolley for moving larger sizes Ensure always well-secured when transporting by vehicle
