1 Materials: worksheet Catalyst (5 min): How can the scientific method be applied to the real world? Remember the steps: Ask question Form a hypothesis Create an experiment Collect the data Analyze the data Report conclusions

2 Materials: None **Get out worksheet from yesterday
**Turn in late foldables to the tray within the first 2 minutes! Catalyst (5 min): Bart believes that mice exposed to microwaves will become extra strong. He decides to perform his experiment by placing 10 mice in the microwave for 10 seconds. He compares these mice to another 10 mice that had not been exposed. Create a hypothesis for this experiment. What is the independent variable? What is the dependent variable? What is the control group? What is the experimental group?

3 Elite Eight Trait Check-Up
Respect the Threshold Everyone on time? Silent for First Five? Be Prepared (2 min) Seated Have materials Working on catalyst

4 Class Motto If there is a problem, We look for a solution. If there is a better way, We find it. If we need help, We ask. If a teammate needs help, We give.

5 Announcements Class Job Applications Now Available!
Paper Return Manager Absent Work Manager Homework Manager Materials Manager Backup Manager All applications due by Friday! Managers will be announced on Monday/Tuesday.

6 Objectives I can create a testable hypothesis for a given question.
I can accurately identify variables and groups in an experiment. I can determine whether my results support or refute my hypothesis.

7 How to take Notes in Ms. Nay’s Class
Start a new piece of lined paper for every section. In the center of your paper, write the section and topic of study Notes 1.1: Variables and Groups

8 Words of the Day Hypothesis- prediction tested in an experiment (your best guess answer to the experimental question) Independent Variable- THING experimenter is testing or changing Dependent Variable- what is measured during an experiment (Data)

9 Words of the Day (continued)
Experimental group- group that receives what is being tested (altered or new condition) Control group- group that serves as a comparison (standard condition)

10 Ms. Nay wants to know if a new brand of sneakers can help our cheerleaders jump higher as they cheer on the Mustangs. She gave out new Nikes, Adidas, or Reeboks to most of the girls and the rest of the squad wore the old, non-name brand sneakers. Then she measured each girl’s jump height and took the average for each shoe type. Shoe Type Average Jump Height Nike 10 inches Adidas 7 inches Reeboks Non-name brand 5 inches

11 Hypothesis- ? Independent Variable-? Dependent Variable-?

12 A study was designed to determine if a chemical called antirosa prevents conjunctivitis (pink eye). 10,000 individuals were divided into four groups. Each person took a pink pill every morning for one year. Some patients received 3 grams of antirosa, some received 6 grams of antirosa, some received 9 grams of antirosa and some received a sugar pill. Then the number of times patients developed conjunctivitis was measured. Hypothesis:? Independent Variable:? Dependent Variable:? Control Group:? Experimental Group:?

13 Team Activity Directions
Work with your group to answer the questions about each experiment on your handout. We will share out the answers in 15 minutes!

14 Experiment 1: The MARTA is flat broke. It wants to test the effect of several kinds of music on subway use. It will play classical music over the loudspeakers on the A, hip-hop on the 4, country on the 2 etc. Then it will look to see if the number of people that take that line changes. State the hypothesis- Identify the independent variable- Identify the dependent variable- Hypothesis? Control? ASK HOW THEY KNEW

15 Identify the independent variable- Identify the dependent variable-
Mr. Manning is addicted to Dunkin Donuts coffee. However, he also loves sleeping in and doesn’t want to get up extra early to get it. He could go to the Dunkin by his house, the one by the Yankee stadium stop, or the one off Jonesboro Road. He decides to test each route to see which adds the least time to his morning commute. Identify the independent variable- Identify the dependent variable- Hypothesis?

16 Creatan is a new drug being studied as a treatment for shortness of breath. In a study with 400 people, 200 people received creatan pills and 200 people received sugar pills as placebos. The patients treated with creatan showed an increase in the distance they could walk before they became short of breath. State the hypothesis to be tested in the experiment Identify the dependent variable in the experiment Identify the control group in the experiment. Identify the experimental group in the experiment State whether the data supports or fails to support the hypothesis and justify your answer Bonus round- what is the definition of independent variable What is the definition of a dependent variable

17 Homework This entire worksheet is due next class complete!

18 Heart Rate Lab QUESTION: How will rap and classical music affect your heart rate? Take 1 minute to answer the Research questions about your feelings towards rap and classical music.

19 Hypothesis If I listen to ……. Then ……..

20 How to count your heart rate
Place two fingers on the side of your neck next to your windpipe Count the number of beats in 60 seconds

21 Procedure Listen to no music for 1 minute Repeat
Record resting heart rate for 60 seconds Repeat Listen to classical music for 1 minute Record heart rate for 60 seconds Listen to rap music for 1 minute

22 Variables Independent Variable? Dependent Variable? Control Group?
Experimental Group(s)?
