Background The Global Electricity Utilities Initiative (GEI ) was launched at the UNFCCC COP17 in Durban (South Africa) in 2011. Significant contribution & leadership of Eskom Survey of 25 leading electricity utilities, representing 10% of global electricity production. The report is available at Examples of early action taken by the electricity industry Progress in meeting the challenges of climate change and energy access.

New Partnership A new partnership between WEC, WBCSD, and G-SEP was created to continue & update on a regular basis the GEI World Energy Council would host the Secretariat Support from our project partner Deloitte Consulting South Africa This is the first time the three organisations are working together, covering most of the utilities around the world.

Mission and Objectives
Showcase early voluntary actions by industry to minimise environmental impact of electricity generation and maximise access to electricity worldwide. Promote international cooperation and the development of a progressive electricity industry through exchange of information, data and best practices. Establish foundation for more efficient company strategies & government policies, to facilitate universal access to affordable electricity produced in an environmentally & economically & technologically efficient way. Support UN SE4All objectives on energy efficiency, universal access and renewables integration. Promote a balanced view of the benefits and remaining challenges of electricity supply Create a global sector baseline (KPI) Monitor and report major achievement, and the results of various actions and programmes undertaken by the leading utilities around the world
