1 Today’s Schedule 7th—8:20-9:10 8th—9:14—10:07 3rd—10:11—11:01 4th– 11:05-11:55 Advisory—11:59-12:19 Lunch—12:19—12:49 6th—12:53-1:43 1st—1:47-2:37 2nd—2:41-3:33 April 10, 2019 Agenda: Respiratory system notes You will need: Body systems workbook, pencil To Do: Turn to pg. 24 in your workbook Learning Target: I will learn the main functions and the components of the respiratory system. Success Criteria: I will be able to explain the function and components of the respiratory system.

2 Agenda 1. Good Thing 2. Rater Check in
3. Turn in Worth the Wait forms due April 26 4. DCA Body Systems—April 24 5. Respiratory System Video 6. Begin Notes on Respiratory System pg. 24 (Use Google Classroom Link) 7. Body System Challenge 8. Launch

3 Respiratory System

4 Functions of the Respiratory System
Supply oxygen to the blood Remove carbon dioxide from the blood

5 What is the function of the respiratory system?
To provide oxygen & carbon dioxide to the body cells. To provide carbon dioxide to body cells & remove oxygen. To provide oxygen to body cells & remove carbon dioxide. To remove oxygen & carbon dioxide from the body cells. 1 2 3 4 5

6 Organs of the Respiratory System
Nose & Mouth (air enters through the nostrils & mouth) Nasal cavity = air is cleaned, warmed, and moistened

7 Organs of the Respiratory System
Throat Pharynx = passageway for both food and air

8 Organs of the Respiratory System
Throat Epiglottis = flap that closes over the larynx when swallowing to keep food & water out

9 Organs of the Respiratory System
Throat Larynx = air only; vocal chords are attached here

10 Organs of the Respiratory System
Throat Trachea (windpipe) = c-shaped rings of cartilage keep it open all the time

11 Which of these does the nasal cavity NOT do to inhaled air?
Clean Warm Moisten Condense 1 2 3 4 5

12 What is the flap called that prevents food from entering the larynx?
Pharynx Epiglottis Larynx Trachea 1 2 3 4 5

13 What is the first structure that only air can pass through (not food)?
Mouth Pharynx Larynx Trachea 1 2 3 4 5

14 Organs of the Respiratory System
Lungs (where oxygen & carbon dioxide are exchanged)

15 Organs of the Respiratory System
Lungs (where oxygen & carbon dioxide are exchanged) Bronchi = 2 small branches at end of trachea; carry air into lungs

16 Organs of the Respiratory System
Lungs (where oxygen & carbon dioxide are exchanged) Bronchioles = smaller branches off of bronchi

17 Organs of the Respiratory System
Lungs (where oxygen & carbon dioxide are exchanged) Alveoli = tiny, grape- like sacs at the end of bronchioles; surrounded by capillaries

18 Organs of the Respiratory System
Diaphragm (muscle below the lungs that helps move air in and out of the body)

19 What is this structure called?
Diagram Diagonal Diaphoresis Diaphragm 1 2 3 4 5

20 What causes you to exhale?
Your lungs contract to squeeze the air out. Your diaphragm moves up, pushing air out of the lungs. Your ribs squeeze the air out of your lungs. Your diaphragm moves down, letting air escape from your lungs. 1 2 3 4 5

21 Gas Exchange in the Lungs
Takes place between alveoli and capillaries

22 Gas Exchange in the Lungs
Takes place between alveoli and capillaries INHALE oxygen enter body into alveoli into capillaries into blood to body cells

23 Gas Exchange in the Lungs
Takes place between alveoli and capillaries EXHALE leaves body into alveoli into capillaries into blood CO2 from body cells

24 Where does the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide occur?
The heart The alveoli The pharynx The body cells

25 What carries the blood back to the heart after it picks up oxygen from the alveoli?
Lungs Aorta Pulmonary artery Pulmonary vein

26 Body System Challenge Skeletal: sternum, radius, patella
Digestive: small intestine, esophagus, stomach Nervous: spinal cord, brain, neuron Immune: white blood cell, thymus Muscular: pectoral, bicep, quadricep Respiratory: lung, trachea, bronchi Endocrine: pituitary, thyroid, hormone Integumentary: pore, epidermis Circulatory: heart, aorta, artery Excretory: bladder, kidney, liver Reproductive: sperm, testes, eggs

27 Do the right thing even when no one is looking.
IT’S CALLED INTEGRITY!
