Read the two extracts below and then answer both part a) and part b). You are advised to spend about 45 minutes on part a) and 30 minutes on part b). For part a), you should focus only on the extracts here rather than referring to the rest of your studied text. a) Compare how the effects of losing money are presented in these extracts. You should consider: • the situations faced by the characters who have lost money • how the characters react to their situations • how the writer’s use of language and techniques creates effects. [20 marks] AND b) Explore another moment in Animal Farm when the animals face a setback.

E.g. Contextually, the execution of the pigs is given much greater impact when we take into account Stalin’s dictatorial show trials and purges which enabled him to rule by terror. Contextually, the rivalry between Napoleon and Snowball is given much greater impact when we take into account the bitter feud between Stalin and Trotsky, which ended in Trotsky’s exile and assassination, which enabled Stalin to rule virtually unopposed in the USSR. Contextually, the Battle of Napoleon’s Windmill is given much greater impact when we take into account Hitler’s invasion of the USSR during World War 2, and the terrible destruction of cities such as Stalingrad and the huge cost in human lives which the Soviets suffered. Contextually, the treatment of Boxer given much greater impact when we take into account Stalin’s brutal regime which exploited the loyalty of the Soviet Proletariat (workers).
