1 Communication and Professional Practice for Medical Laboratory Technologists (CPP for MLTs) Course

2 What is the CPP for MLTs Course?
1. is a course for internationally educated medical laboratory technologists (IEMLTs); 2. The CPP for MLTs Course is a non-credit course. It is a pre-requisite for applying to the Manitoba IEMLT Bridging Program. See website for entrance requirements and further details: Note: Successful completion of the CPP for MLTs Course does not guarantee entrance into the Manitoba IEMLT Bridging Program CCPTA – 20 weeks (300 hours) a) PPS – 6 X 3 hour-workshops (18 hours) b) CCCN – 13 weeks x 3 modules

3 CPP for MLTs Course PURPOSE: - to increase awareness and build skills in Language, Culture and Communication for working as an MLT in the Canadian Health Care context. Focus: - critical, non-technical skills and strategies for communication and professional practice needed for working as an MLT in the Canadian health care context. Skill-building in speaking and listening for health care context. (Reading is required for online component and some F2F activities; writing assignments are related to ‘Reflective Practice’.)

Schedule: 120 hours over 12 weeks (Feb.- May) (Feb. 19 – May 16/2019) Blended Delivery format: - Online component hours/week (requires access to and ability to use a computer for learning purposes) (prep for workshop and/or post-workshop assignments) Face-to-face (F2F) workshops (Tues. and Thurs. 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.) hours/week 10 hours/week(min.)

8 Units: Introduction to Language and Communication Overview of HealthCare in Canada and Manitoba Patient-Centred Practice - Basic Therapeutic Communication The “Language” of Health Care medical terminology vs. ‘lay language’, slang, idioms Collaborative Practice Professional Communication (“Soft” skills) (assertiveness, giving/receiving feedback, conflict management) Professionalism and Professional Practice (teamwork & decision-making) Competency Profile for MLTs

10 Assessment and Evaluation
1. Course Components (Complete/Incomplete): attendance (min. 80% of F2F component) & active participation successful completion of all program requirements (online & F2F), including the ability to work in groups and independently 2. Language and Communication Thresholds (CLB level 8) demonstrated skills, knowledge, and achievement of outcomes Final progress report (complete/incomplete) is issued to participants: strengths and weaknesses in language and communication CLB level in Listening and Speaking; CLB level in Writing (Reflective Practice); (Reading is not assessed.)

11 Three Eligibility Requirements
An applicant: 1. must be an internationally educated medical laboratory technologist (IEMLT) or currently enrolled in RRC’s Medical Laboratory Sciences program; Consideration may be given to the following: MLTs registered with CMLTM who would benefit from intercultural communication training for study or work IE Medical Laboratory Assistants who meet the remaining eligibility requirements Preference will be given to IEMLTs who have completed the CSMLS Prior Learning Assessment process ( and who are planning to apply to DSM Bridging program in 2019. Name, profession, and contact info. (phone number and address) Registration with specific regulatory body (if applicable) Career goal timeline Plan of action Other: information that illustrates your readiness and appropriateness for CIEHP (e.g., clinical competency exams or medical exam results , bridging course completion, PLAR, etc.)

2. be a permanent resident (consideration will be given to Canadian Citizens); 3. have a referral from WELARC (welarc.net), and the minimum language proficiency levels* in Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing in one of the following: IELTS 7 OR CLB level 8 OR CanTEST 4 (or Institutional CanTEST at RRC**) MELA 8 (currently unavailable in Manitoba) *Note: IELTS 6.5, CLB Level 7, or CanTEST 3.5 in reading or writing may be considered. **RRC - LTC’s Assessment Centre:
