What is it, and what does it do?
“In 1867, Christopher Sholes, Charles Glidden and Samuel Soule invented the first practical mechanical typewriter machine.”URL: “A mechanical or electromechanical machine for writing in characters similar to those produced by printer's type…”
3
How does it work? “It works by “means of keyboard-operated types striking a ribbon to transfer ink or carbon impressions onto the paper.” “Rearranged the typewriter keyboard so that the commonest letters were not so close together and the type bars would come from opposite directions. Thus they would not clash together and jam the machine. The new arrangement was the "QWERTY" arrangement that typists use today.”

Who invented it? The typewriter was invented by Christopher Sholes and his partner Charles Glidden. Christopher was born in He received primary schooling. Then, he was apprenticed to a printer. He followed his parents to Wisconsin where he got a job as the editor of a local newspaper. .
5
When and where was it invented?
“The typewriter was invented in Sholes , and his friend, Carlos Glidden, patented a typewriting machine, which they eventually sold to Remington.”
6
The importance of this invention
“Handwriting was slow and messy, so it was inevitable that someone would try to find an alternative.” The typewriter was easier to read and businesses were able to communicate faster. “One of Christopher’s other inventions was the QWERTY keyboard layout, which placed the most frequently used keys apart from each other, so they would not stick.”
