Figure 1 Theoretical dependence of overall sieving coefficient (θ) on membrane Peclet number (Pe) for a composite membrane consisting of two layers in series. All calculations assumed that Pe1 = Pe2 = Pe. For a given membrane and solute, Pe is proportional to the filtration rate of water (that is, GFR). The three curves correspond to different combinations of the convective hindrance factors in the two layers: W1 = W2 = 0.1 for identical layers; W1 = 0.02 and W2 = 0.5 for selective layer 1; and W1 = 0.5 and W2 = 0.02 for selective layer 2.
