(A) Control+saline (CS): animals instilled with approximately 0.3mL of saline; (B) emphysema 20mg/mL (E20): animals instilled with approximately 0.3mL of 20mg/mL papain in saline; and (C) emphysema 40mg/mL (E40): animals instilled with approximately 0.3mL of 40mg/mL papain in saline. Animals were euthanized after 60 days. Magnification: 50× (HE). Alveolar destruction was determined by the number of times that a predetermined group of coherent lines (1.25mm2 area and 1.50mm total length) crossed parenchymal structures. The lower the number of times that structures were crossed, the more extensive the lesion.

Right and left ventricle lipid hydroperoxides and antioxidant capacity in emphysema hamsters. (A) The tert-butyl hydroperoxide-induced chemiluminescence was monitored continuously for 40min. The area under the curve for each animal curve was determined to compare groups. (B) Effect of emphysema on total antioxidant capacity in the supernatant of the right and left cardiac muscles of hamsters treated with 2 different doses of papain. Results are expressed in μM trolox. Both analyses were performed by 1-way ANOVA, followed by Bonferroni as the post-test. A value of p<0.05 was considered significant.
