Welcome to our Nature Protection Hospital!
Prepared by Raminta Rupšienė
2
Let‘s meet the patient! It’s our EARTH
3
Our job today is to find out…
What are the symptoms of the illness? What is the diagnosis? What are the causes of the illness? What is the best medicine to treat this illness?
4
Symptom Nr. 1 Smog in the cities
Smog is a combination of the words smoke and fog. It's formed when gases and fine particulate matter react in the presence of sunlight. Smog is made up of a lot of pollutants. Most harmful to our health and to the natural environment are those that come from cars, trucks and machines that run on fuels like gasoline. Chemical sprays, oil-based paints, wind-blown dust and other airborne fine particles from factories and construction sites add to the problem.
5
Symptom Nr.2 Plants are dying
Acid rain destroys the leaves of plants. When acid rain infiltrates into soils, it changes the chemistry of the soil making it unfit for many living things that depend on the soil as a habitat or for nutrition.
6
Symptom Nr. 3 Climate change – earth is heating up
Climate change (or global warming), is the process of our planet heating up. The Earth has warmed by an average of 1°C in the last century, and although that might not sound like much, it means big things for people and wildlife around the globe. Unfortunately, rising temperatures don’t just mean that we’ll get nicer weather – if only! The changing climate will actually make our weather more extreme and unpredictable. As temperatures rise, some areas will get wetter and lots of animals (and humans!) could find they’re not able to adapt to their changing climate.
7
Symptom Nr. 4 Glaciers melt down
As the temperature rises, our ice caps are at risk. The two polar caps are shrinking and huge amounts of ice fall into the sea. In Greenland the amount of ice falling into the sea has doubled in the past few years. As the average temperature of the oceans rises, the water expands.
9
Symptom Nr. 5 People get ill
Air pollution can also make people sick. It can make it difficult to breath and cause diseases such as lung cancer, respiratory infections, and heart disease. According to the World Health Organization, 2.4 million people die each year from air pollution. Air pollution can be especially dangerous to children living in big cities with bad smog.
10
Let’s remember all 5 symptoms
11
Time for the patient check up form
Name - EARTH Age – 50 million years
13
So what is the diagnosis?
14
What are the causes of this illness?
16
Let’s play the game! Do you understand what I say?
17
Let’s think - what can we do to stop air pollution on our earth?
19
Time to write the prescription!
To stop air pollution we can…
20
What will you take with you from this lesson?
A new word An interesting fact An important decision A new game ??????
21
Thank you! So what Earth do you want to live in?
