The King has asked you to follow a unique set of directions, and to map your course. He would like you to log where you visit, and the associated Oceania region.

16 Monday Do Now Blackbirding: The coercion of people through trickery and kidnapping to work as laborers. 1. Copy down the definition on your worksheet. 2. Use context clues to figure out what the word “coercion” means.

20 Tuesday Definition: Beachcombing: an activity concerned with “combing,” or searching, the beach, looking for items of value, interest, or usefulness. It is a term often used to describe people who live on the beach.

21 Beachcombers There were many reasons why foreigners became beachcombers in Oceania. First, some people were simply shipwrecked, and had to look around the beach for things to survive with.

22 Beachcombers Other crew members on ships were troublemakers, who were abandoned by the ship captain.

23 Beachcomber Others chose to escape their lives in America or other places around the world and were came to Oceania with the prospects of a better life.

24 Beachcomber Certain beachcombers decided that life in the ocean simply wasn’t for them, and they abandoned their ships for a life based on land

25 Beachcomber Others had tried to stage a mutiny, or a revolution on the ship, and were trying to hide from certain punishment.
