The SOS response is required for persistence to ofloxacin but not prior treatment. Survival fraction after 5 hours of ofloxacin treatment (5 μg/ml) (A) and MDK99.9 (time to kill 99.9% of the population) (B) are represented for the wild-type strain and isogenic LexA3 (SOS OFF), LexA51 ΔSulA (SOS ON), ΔSulA and ΔTisAB mutants. Bar graphs represent mean values of at least three independent experiments. Independent replicate values are plotted as dots. Student’s t-tests were performed between data for the wild-type (WT) and mutant strains (***P < 0.001).
