6-2 Solving Systems by Substitution
Algebra 1
3
Substitution Steps 1.) Solve one equation for one of the variables which has a coefficient of 1 or -1. 2.) Then substitute your result from #1 into the other equation and solve for a variable. 3.) Then substitute your result from #2 into the first original equation. 4.) Your solution should be written as an ordered pair, (x,y).
4
Example 1 y= 2 + x 2x + 5y = -11 (-3,-1)
5
Example 2 x + y=6 3x + y=15 (9/2, 3/2)
6
Ex. 3 Try this one! y – 2x =3 3x -2y = 5 (-11,-19)
7
Example 4 x = 3y - 4 6y = 2x + 8 Infinitely Many ( same slope, same y-intercept therefore same line)
8
Example 5 y = 2x + 1 4x – 2y = 6 No Solution
