1 Globalising (Internationalising) the Curriculum
Why is this important? What does it mean? How do we do it? This is the structure of the session.

2 Why is it important? Learning to live in an increasing interconnected global society Increasing diversity of students and staff (Formerly) Government priorities : general education and FE strategies / policies HEA Priority HEA – Higher Education Academy

3 Global Learning Exploration of how our actions affect the lives of others, locally and globally Analysing how global forces affect justice, equality, equity (locally and globally) Challenging prejudice, including challenging Eurocentric / Western views on issues Presenting multiple viewpoints from different cultures / geographical areas / sections of communities Embracing complexity, exploration of identities, living with difference Critical reflective thinking based on greater international / global understanding with the aim of bringing about change Promoting a collaborative, participatory approach to learning and action This is a framework on global learning developed by Clare Bentall and colleagues at DERC, Institute of Education, for use on a research and development project. It is a distillation of ideas from a range of literature.

Increasing links with other countries Taking into account needs / views of ‘international’ students Cross-cultural understanding These are possible interpretation of the internationalisation agenda across Higher Education

5 Sustainable development
Economic, social, environmental development that does not compromise the future for future generations. This is a term some people are familiar with

6 Discussion questions How do we apply these ideas in our work contexts to: Curriculum / course design (content and structure) Materials / resources Aims and learning outcomes Types of learning activities Relationship between teacher and learner Application of theories of learning to our teaching Assessment? 2. What are the challenges to doing this effectively?
