1 Whiteboard Protocol Bell work: Give two examples of mechanical physics. OBJECTIVE: TLW how to determine the different kinds of physics. CLASSWORK: Identifying different kinds of Physics HOMEWORK: Physics book page 9; questions 1-5 EXIT TICKET: What is thermodynamics? 7/17/2019

2 Mathematical Review The following formulas are used to help us solve Physics problems: F = ma ( Newton’s Second Law) PE = mgh ( Potential formula) KE = ½ mv2 ( Kinetic energy) W = f xd ( Work) Vavg = d/t ( Velocity) Aavg = v/t (Acceleration) 7/17/2019

3 Math Review Suppose you had a problem in physics and you had to solve for mass in the potential energy formula. ( PE = mgh) Step 1 ….. PE = mgh Step 2 ….. Rewrite the formula: mgh = PE Step 3 …. Divide both sides by gh Step 4 …. m = PE/gh 7/17/2019

4 Math Review Suppose you wanted to solve for acceleration in the formula (F = ma): Step 1 …. Write the formula: F = ma Step 2 …. Rewrite the formula as: ma = F Step 3 …. Divide both sides by a: Step 4 …. After dividing, then the formula is m = F/a 7/17/2019

5 Lesson 1 What is Physics? “Forces in action”

6 What is Physics? Many people consider physics as a science that evolves many formulas. Physics is the study of the physical world. There would be no inventions of appliances, tools and other things without physics. 7/17/2019

8 The Different kinds of Physics
Name Subjects Examples Mechanics Motion and its causes, interactions between objects Falling objects, friction, weight, spinning objects Thermodynamics Heat and temperature Melting and freezing processes, engines, refrigerators Vibrations and wave Phenomena Specific types of respective motions Springs, pendulums, sound Optics light Mirrors, lenses, color, astronomy Electromagnetism Electricity, magnetism, and light Electrical charge, circuitry, permanent magnets, electromagnets Relativity Particle moving at any speed, including very high speeds Particle collisions, particles accelerator, nuclear energy Quantum mechanics Behavior of submicroscopic particles The atom and its parts 7/17/2019

9 Scientific Method Steps
What is Physics? Scientific Method Steps Propose a hypothesis. Design and perform an experiment to test the hypothesis. Analyze your data to determine whether to accept or reject the hypothesis. If necessary, propose and test a new hypothesis. 7/17/2019

10 What is physics? Physics Models
A pattern, plan, representation, or description designed to show the structure or workings of an object, system or concept. 7/17/2019

11 What is Physics? Name two area of physics.
Identify the area of physics that is most relevant to each of the following situations. A high school football Food preparation Playing in the school band 7/17/2019
