2 Hook Use this slide to get your audience’s attention and stimulate their interest in the topic Use a challenging question or striking fact, thought-provoking quote or poem, recent news item, or memorable photo or graphic MI activity: Discuss the importance of having a “hook” slide or activity to grab the attention of your learners. 3 Topic Use this slide to clearly and succinctly define your overall topic, as in, “Our topic today is…” Tell them what you are going to tell them! Be prepared to explain exactly and forcefully how and why this topic is important to them MI activity: Explain the importance of clearly and succinctly defining the topic. Stress the importance of NEVER assuming everyone in the audience “already understands” what the topic is! 4 Objective Use this slide to explain what your audience should know or be able to do after the presentation is over Be specific, as in, “By the conclusion of this presentation, you will be able to…” MI activity: Stress the importance of clearly explaining your instructional goal or objective near the beginning of your program. 5 Content Use this slide to list the main points you are going to discuss Use only a few words to describe each main point Use one bullet point for each point Limit your content to 3-6 main points MI activity: Demonstrate the importance of boiling your contents down to a few key points. For shorter presentations (an hour or less), it should be possible to limit the key points to Discuss the technique of using a slide with a few “bullet points” as a starting point for the presenter to discuss the topic. 6 Q and A Use this slide to stimulate discussion with your audience
Strongly encourage your learners to ask questions about anything that wasn’t clear in what you’ve covered MI activity: Emphasize the importance of having a pre-planned Q and A activity or some other means of involving your audience and evaluating their comprehension of the topic. Review your opening objective – was it attained? Tell them what you told them!
