5 United Way has community partnerships with the towns of Chestermere, Cochrane, High River, Okotoks, and Strathmore. These Area Community Partnerships engage residents, facilitate collaboration, focus efforts on key social priority areas, and fund a network of programs that serve the community.

7 Overcoming Poverty Complex challenges like job loss, illness, and the mounting cost of living prevent many people from realizing a future full of possibility. For many in our city, poverty is a daily struggle. United Way works with partner agencies to ensure everyone has access to the foundational building blocks of a good life; things like food, employment training, and financial counselling. 2017 By the numbers: $10.2 million invested to support 27 programs and initiatives delivered by 22 agency partners with the help of 8,415 volunteers who contributed 285,894 hours to reach 40,703 people

9 Successful Kids Poverty, food insecurity, mental illness, domestic violence, and lack of early-year foundational supports have life-long effects on children. As they enter adolescence and young adulthood, they often struggle to make connections, finish high school, and find meaningful jobs. United Way works with partner agencies to provide kids with the support they need to succeed; things like early learning programs, mentoring, tutoring, and family counselling and support. 2017 By the numbers: $12 million invested to support 53 programs and initiatives delivered by 35 agency partners With the help of 3,405 volunteers who contributed 74,387 hours to reach 31,769 kids

11 Strong Communities In many neighbourhoods, residents find it difficult to access the essential supports and services they need. The challenge is amplified for seniors, people living with disabilities, or newcomers, often leading to social isolation and mental health issues. United Way works with partner agencies to help communities thrive through various programs, services, engagement opportunities, counselling, and community social networks. 2017 By the numbers: $20.4 million invested to support 93 programs and initiatives delivered by 76 agency partners with the help of 5,275 volunteers who contributed 183,066 hours to reach 80,352 people

14 Financial Empowerment
Financial Empowerment is a city-wide initiative comprised of 88 organizations working together to reduce poverty in our city by addressing root causes. Individuals and families living on a low income are provided opportunities to help them reduce debt, grow savings, and build assets. Financial Empowerment goal: 45,600 people living on a low income will see a positive change in their net worth by To date, 21,042 low income individuals have seen a positive change in their net worth.  Financial Empowerment has seen sustained growth and success since its implementation. Moving from a new initiative to a stable investment since its implementation began two years ago, management of Financial Empowerment will transition to Momentum, a strong community partner, by July 1, This transition enables United Way to explore new signature initiatives that will advance the cause of overcoming poverty. United Way will continue to fundraise for this important initiative.

15 All In for Youth All In for Youth is a city-wide movement focused on high school completion. The initiative provides innovative solutions to help youth stay in school, return to school, complete school, and successfully transition to the workforce and adulthood. All In for Youth brings together schools, government, corporations, agencies, and individuals to build a system of supports to help youth reach their potential. Key results: more than 10,000 positive adult-youth connections established over 2,000 volunteers committed an estimated 59,000 hours, equivalent to approximately 28 full-time positions for one calendar year

16 Community Hubs Community Hubs is an initiative that focuses on building strong communities by connecting and strengthening a sense of belonging and neighbourhood attachment. Six hubs, which will serve more than 200,000 Calgarians, are planned for the communities of Bowness, Greater Forest Lawn, North of McKnight, Sunalta, Village Square, and Vista Heights. The initiative is a partnership between United Way, The City of Calgary, and Rotary Club of Calgary. Key results: In partnership with the Calgary food bank, the Village Square Community Hub launched a Food Bank depot in September. In the first 15 weeks of operations, 115 families were served. United Way and several corporate partners in the technology sector jointly developed a Tech Lab pilot to support residents in the North of McKnight communities. Providing education and access to technology, over 50 residents received more than 300 hours of free instruction.

17 Indigenous Strategy The Natoo’si – Indigenous Healing and Well-being Initiative emerged in mid-2015 to address intergenerational trauma by supporting comprehensive healing approaches that strengthen Indigenous cultural identity. In 2017 United Way invested $1.6 million in 5 programs and strategies that helped 670 Indigenous people deepen their connection with their cultures, and began their healing journey from intergenerational trauma.

18 Gen Next is a United Way initiative that brings local millennials together to transform our city through leadership and philanthropy. Members take part in networking opportunities and programs to learn about local social issues and inspire their peers to become the next generation of community leaders. Program offerings have provided hundreds of millennials with a deeper understanding and sense of ownership of the critical social issues facing our city, and United Way’s important role in addressing them.

19 Women United is a strong network of female donors that engage together on social issues impacting our city. Women United provides meaningful opportunities for women to connect with each other and their communities as philanthropists, volunteers, and leaders.

21 How tax credits work Your donation to United Way of Calgary and Area is eligible for valuable charitable tax credits. For an annual taxable income less than $205,842: • The first $200 of all your charitable giving entitles you to a tax credit of 25% (10% provincial tax credit and 15% federal tax credit). • You are entitled to a tax credit of 50% for all charitable gifts exceeding the initial $200 (21% provincial tax credit and 29% federal tax credit). If your annual taxable income is more than $205,842 you may be eligible for further tax credits. Please contact a financial advisor for more information.
