2 Climate Monsoons – Seasonal rains from east to west over the islands.
Brings rains and higher temperatures Winter months bring typhoons. A typhoon is a tropical hurricane.

3 Peeps and cultures Crowded cities – high population density
PD – amount of people living in an area High population density effects Recycling programs Homogeneous culture Patriarchal society – father leads and dominates the family

4 Religion Shinto – worship the forces of nature and the spirits of dead ancestors Buddhism – seek spiritual enlightenment by overcoming selfishness Confucianism – general respect for elders and obedience to peeps of authority. Loyalty and respect.

5 Economic 1543 – Portuguese trading ships arrived in Japan
After 100 years, Japan closes trade with Europe out of fear of being conquered 1853, Commodore Matthew Perry steamed into Japan to negotiate a trade treaty between Japan and the U.S. If Japan does not trade, US Fleet will open fire

6 Meiji Reforms Japan’s emperor, Meiji, implemented reforms across the country Japanese officials sent to the US and Europe to learn about industry The Diet, or parliament, created legal reforms Basic education was granted to all Japanese children Within 80 years, Japan’s country is up to par with other world powers

7 Imperialism Imperialism – expanding a nation’s territories or military and political power over another country Japan – few natural resources. Iron and Petroleum are two natural resources most important to Japan.

8 WWII Path to economic recovery is expansion
Militarism – glorification of the military and readiness for war. December 7th, 1941 – Japan attacks Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. U.S. ends WWII by dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki

9 Economic Boom Post WWII economy boomed faster than any other country in the world Japan adopted and improved U.S. and European ideas Work ethic – for the company. It is a dishonor to be unemployed or unsuccessful. Team Effort.
