Important foundations
School/faculty/university support University/Course reputation Mobility Clear guidelines Early intervention with problems Commitment and passion of coordinators CAPHIA Cairns 2018
17
Barriers Difficulties in working with agencies (have many pressing priorities, teaching students and research not usually one of them!) Project may not be well defined [Ongoing] Restructuring (think Dep of Education!) Industry ethics/policy approvals Competition culture in NFPs The only challenge I've seen is in streamlining the ethics approval processes in research. Student impact Start building a professional networks
Academic knowledge attainment Real world training Sense of achievement Increase professional communication skills Increase opportunities Increased Interaction with peers Assisted with knowledge gaps Prepares students for post university life Develops a sense of pride/achievement Workplace skills training Start building a professional networks CAPHIA Cairns 2018
19
Research impact/benefits
Identify industry priorities Identify evidence gaps Industry learns importance of evidence and [some basic] research skills Creates networks Opportunities for research partnerships and recruiting Funding opportunities Increase capacity to complete research Increase research training opportunities Promote and support applied research Generate enthusiasm for, and support of research in practice and policy- making CAPHIA Cairns 2018
20
Teaching impact/benefits
Common student strengths Student weaknesses (possible improvements for our coursework) Skill requirements University hears first hand from agencies Technologies Software Practices Policies New knowledge Enable expert guest speakers Use real world examples in teaching Provide contacts for students Increase networks/relationships CAPHIA Cairns 2018
21
Practice impact/benefits
Increased evidence-based practice Undertake work that otherwise might not be undertaken. Increased capacity More recent evidence Identify future recruits Increased networks Increased evidence-informed policy making Staff gain valuable management experience of students CAPHIA Cairns 2018
22
Advice and Tips Be on the lookout for contacts/networks, wherever you are! Mindset- concept bringing together of ideas/people/concepts/ disciplines/agencies etc etc Be prepared to troubleshoot Be flexible Get feedback Have a strategy to remember names! CAPHIA Cairns 2018
23
Ideas/challenges for future
Increase student and academic visits to industry Incorporate industry engagement into (further into) other units if suitable and appropriate (e.g. Health Research Design and Methods – Proposal) Enable undergraduate students to ‘fit’ practicum into their course CAPHIA Cairns 2018
