Tricky areas The passage may contain areas where punctuation is acceptable, but not essential Understanding the piece- One sentence at a time People often over use commas

Key ideas and tips The on screen counter shows how many pieces of punctuation need to be added to the passage It will start at 15 and reduce by one each time a piece of punctuation is added to the text until it reaches zero Once a candidate has added 15 pieces of punctuation to the text, they will be unable to add any further punctuation unless they remove a previously added punctuation mark This counter allows candidates to track the number of pieces of punctuation added and provide a quick check that all punctuation marks have been added

Top Tips to take away Before the day Prepare well
READ! As with all aspects of English, reading widely is key. If you read for pleasure and to find information, your understanding and use of language and punctuation will grow. As experienced readers of texts you will instinctively be able to sort the correct from the incorrect Practise, practise, practise! Complete as many practice tests as you can and find out which areas you are confident with and which you need to work a little harder at. They will tell you how to add punctuation to the text Once you have added punctuation to a word, it turns blue If you want to change something, click on the blue word and reset it You may only add 15 pieces of punctuation You will need to click on ‘OK’ to ensure that your changes are saved
