4. T: If you are given a choice right, what do you like, listening to
a story, telling a story to a class, singing, dancing to a song
or compose a song?
K: Ummm… anything.
T: Anything ah? Ah.. ok. Choose one for me. When..during a lesson right…
K: Listen to stories.
T: Listen to stories.Who would you want to tell the story?
K: Uhh… the teacher
T: What about yourself? Would you want to tell a story to your
friends?
K: Ahh..I don’t dare to…
T: You don’t dare to….
T: What about.. What if your friends tell you the story, would
you like that?
K: Uhh.. I just want the teacher to just tell the story.
T: Why would you want just the teacher to tell a story?
K: Because (pause) my friends and I don’t like reading too much.

S: Sometimes, I..my throat gets too dry and I suddenly halfway
cough.
T: Oh that’s why you don’t like to tell the story and you prefer the
teacher to tell a story.

friend, teacher or we just play a CD for you?
L: Uhh..A teacher
T: A teacher tells a story? Ok, why,why don’t you like to listen from a CD?
L: Because it will be a bit too long.
T: Too long? So how long is too long for you?
L: Around… 7 to 10 mins
T: Oh that’s very long. So a CD..Ok, let’s say we play a CD right now, how
long should a CD be?
L: Around 3 to 5 mins..
T: You don’t like too long?
L: Yah
T: Very boring is it?
L: Nods
T: Ohh ok. But if a teacher were to tell a story?
L: Uhmm (mumbling)
T: Can be longer than 5 minutes?
L: No
T: Also 3 to 5 mins?

6. T: So a teacher cannot tell a very long story, just a short story will do?
L: Sometimes uhm short, can tell a short story but sometimes also tell
long stories.
T: Long story..
S: Yah
T: But how long is long? But at what length of time is it comfortable for
you?
L: Around 5 to 10 minutes

T: Do you think we should have lessons on respect?
K: Yes.
T: How do you think we should we teach it?
K: To show what is respect.
T: Ah ha… in what form? Uhm..how do you want the lesson to be like?
K: Anything.
T: Anything as in?
K: As in…. watch watch some shows.
T: Watch some shows huh? What kind of shows?
K: On respect
T: Ah.. Like do you want it to be a film show or a cartoon show or…?
K: A cartoon

some lessons on respect?
S: Ah…yes
T: How do you think we should teach it?
S: To make it like a skit and the teachers would talk about the values after
the end
T: Uhm.. You like skits is it? Oh..ok..right uhmm so uhm.. how long is the
skit.. if you want it to be?
S: Around 4 to 5 minutes
T: If you want to have a skit, what kind of ah…lines would you have- would
you want a long paragraph or would you want something that’s very easy
to memorise?
S: Something easy to memorise.
T: How easy would it be, like in your experience as you’ve done skits
before…how..
S: A few sentences.
T: How few is few?
S: Around 3 to 4 sentences.
T: 3 to 4… more than 4? , too long? It’s still ok?

S: Too long

T: Uhm.. What about youtube videos? Do you like watching
youtube videos on values on respect?
L: Yes
T: You like? So how long should a youtube video be?
L: Something like 3 to 4 or 3 to 5 minutes.

10. Interview from parents
T: So firstly, I’d like to know, what respect means to you?
KM: Respect uhm.. is about having good opinions of another person’s
character and his or her own ideas. So respect could be shown to
someone who is more junior or more senior than you.
T: Uhm ok, ok. Alright. Ahh..do you think we should have lessons on
respect in schools?
KM: Yes, Uhm through a variety of lessons like stories, videos or comics
and then, we can even bring in real life situations. Like pupils or
young children could relate to.
T: What would the examples be like such that the young children can
relate to?
KM: If it’s for very young children, uhm simple things like greeting adults
(pause) uhm talking in a friendly manner to the elderly and uhm
lessons should be interactive as children are very kinesthetic, aural
and visual learners. So they should be involved in a lesson and
I think the learning would be more interesting if they interact.
So I recommend, lessons which involve pupils and those which are
very interactive.

11. Interview from parents
T: So if we do have a lesson on respect, what activities would you like us
to include in your child’s lesson?
KM: I think it is important to include both examples and non-examples of
respect so that they can tell the difference between it’s ability to show
some respect and then what are the wrong things to do that doesn’t
show respect. And they can even design their own skit you know like
acting out their own shows on projecting the correct behaviour and
actions or words to use in their skit.
T: Uhm, Ok right. Ok now, what do you think your child’s teacher should
do when teaching a lesson on respect in order to make it more
meaningful and interesting?
KM: Uhm.. Other than the structured lessons that the teacher could have
conducted that is stated in the teacher’s guide or structured activities.
Teachers can demonstrate respect through their daily interaction with
the children or surface any teachable moments in instances that are
taught in both their stories or even behaviours when teachers deal with
children.

12. Interview with parents
T: May I know what does respect mean to you?
LM: To me respect is a behaviour that a person exhibits when
they are with another individual be it someone younger or
older but most of the time, respect is being shown to people who
are older than you.
T: Thank you. Uhm.. Do you think we should have lessons on respect
in schools?
LM: Yes
T: How do you think the teacher should teach it?
LM: The teacher should show the pupils how to show respect.
First, the teacher must give an example of how respect is practised.
T: How would you want the lesson should be like for your child?
LM: I would like the lesson to be hands on, something like a role play,
something that the children actually try out, the children can
differentiate between a behaviour which is not respectful or a
behaviour which is showing respect or being respectful to others.
