Provides community with current state of the art research
Allows to disseminate knowledge through journals/conference/summer school participation
Allows to learn and share knowledge, collaborate

5. Which skills are essential
Know your audience!
Know what appeared previously in the same journals
Never include any statements that are not proven/speculative/incorrect or not verifiable
Writing and polishing article sometimes as important as performing research itself!
