Course Target: I can create poetry that emphasizes various forms and figurative language. WRITE DOWN WHAT IS IN WHITE!

2 Definition Poetry is the art of expressing your thoughts in words-a form of literary art that often uses particular forms and conventions to expand the literal meaning of the words, or to evoke emotional or sensual responses.

3 History of Poetry Many ancient works were composed in poetic form to aid memorization and oral transmission in prehistoric and ancient societies. The Odyssey ( BC) The Deluge Tablet (2nd Millennium BC)

4 Poetic structures and definitions have changed throughout history,
Poetry in ancient societies also became sources of ritual, as well as aesthetic importance. Aristotle’s Poetics describes three genres of poetry: epic, comic and tragic Modern theorists now often reject traditional forms and question traditional definitions of poetry. Poetic structures and definitions have changed throughout history, but one thing remains the same: poetry has the power to evoke emotions!

8 Stanza: A group of lines in a poem
Do not go Gentle into that Good Night by Dylan Thomas Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light.   Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night. 9 Rhythm: The beat the poem moves to
Rhyme Scheme: The rhyming pattern of a poem. Rhyme schemes are labeled according to their rhyme sounds. Every rhyme sound is given its own letter of the alphabet to distinguish it from the other rhyme sounds that may appear in the poem. Example: the first rhyme sound of a poem is designated as “a.” Every time that rhyme sound appears in the poem, no matter where it is found, it is called “a.”

11 Images Poets use these often in their writing!
Imagery: The poetic device that makes use of visual, auditory or tactile word pictures in poetry. Images are created by using at least one or more of the five senses.

12 Theme: The overall message in a poem.
Mood: The way a reader feels when reading the poem Attitude: The way the poet expresses an idea in a poem Tone: The way the poet expresses an emotion in a poem Style: The combination of the poet’s techniques, messages, subjects, word choice and visual design of their poetry.
