Adobe® Intelligent Document Platform Extending the Power, Share the Intelligence
Adobe Intelligent Document Platform enables organizations to automate and accelerate the flow of business-critical information among: Employees; Customers; Suppliers & Constituents. The 3 core elements of the IDP – Universal Client; Intelligent Document & Document Services Adobe’s solution enables: BOTH the publishing of information in PDF and two-way transactions - conducting business using transactional Intelligent Documents Adobe Document Services are the way that Adobe helps customers to create, manage & integrate Intelligent Documents with enterprise business systems. The Intelligent Document is really based on PDF. We know that PDF is a secure and reliable way to present information. It’s an industry-standard. You can go to any website or to any internal organization and they are probably using PDF today. Question: Provide a show of hands how many of you have use a PDF form. How many of you have opened a PDF document or form in Adobe Acrobat OR published your documents in PDF. Most likely would be unanimous. The Adobe strategy is built around the Intelligent Document, leveraging the Universal Client–which is Adobe Reader. There are over 750 Million downloads—or web browsers, so if a customer wants to write an application in HTML, they can do it in HTML, as well. PDF is a rich format in terms of its presentation capabilities—making sure that it looks and feels exactly as the author intended regardless of what system you are viewing it on or if you print it—is the foundation of the Intelligent Document. The Intelligent Document is not just a conveyor of information, but a conveyor of business transactions for presenting information, having people react to that information and then kick off some kind of process.

PDF & XML - Intelligent Document
Combines Paper Advantages in Secure, Dynamic, Digital Document Watermark imbedded Free Adobe Reader: 750 M New PC Free Adobe Reader Platform independent Microsoft, Linux, Mac OS PDF Specifications Public 2,000 PDF tool developers 35 Standards Committees Essentially a PDF document with XML capabilities, Intelligent Documents combine the best attributes of traditional static documents with interactive capabilities. We refer to these documents as “intelligent,” because each one “knows” where it’s from, what it’s supposed to look like, where to find and put the data it contains, and who has access to it. When we talk about the business logic layer, we are talking about are 3 components: Calculations & validations - £ to Euros, $ to Euros, ensuring data entered is correct & document is complete. Adding controls to the document – Unlocking hidden features in Adobe Reader – Turning it into a rich client – allowing users to save a copy of their data, work offline, participate in collaboration using sticky notes, highlights, etc., using electronic signatures, so they can conduct business transactions electronically, and then being able to submit that data back to back-end systems. Controls around security—Enforce who has access to the document, by individual or group, what can they do with the document when they get it - Being able to invoke these rights over a time-based period. We can create a policy that says someone has access for six months or until a certain date – we can change that timeframe or rights – even after a document has been distributed. Adobe Policy Server – allows this key differentiator. The last piece of the Intelligent Document is around XML. Adobe has now architected the way we define our templates purely in XML. We support XML data interoperability, so we can support XML schemas and XML data files, as well as web services. The XDP on the bottom of the Intelligent Document stands for XML Data Package. XDP is the way we communicate this information with back-end systems, while PDF is the way we communicate information with humans. For example, these documents are “intelligent” enough to carry text, graphics and video and to present it both on-screen electronically, and on paper, minus video. This means intelligent documents will look as good — or better — to customers or constituents online as they would if they’d received them in line, or in the mail. Plus, they’ll carry the familiar look and feel of a paper document to put your customers at ease, as well as support compliance regulations. Finally, because these intelligent documents are PDF-based, they offer a host of security features that actually travel with each document, as well as an archiving capability.

Adobe LiveCycle Document Services
The third component of the IDP are the deep and rich set of document services I mentioned earlier. These services are what create intelligent documents and integrate them into your IT environment and business processes, as well as enable you to manage those documents throughout their entire life cycle. When it comes to generating documents, for example, these services allow you to assemble Intelligent Documents in PDF format by merging data from a variety of resources like databases, applications and Web Services with pre-designed document templates to produce both rich and highly-personalized documents. Next, our Collaboration Services enable your colleagues — or anyone you chose — to share, review, mark-up and sign Intelligent Documents, and to do so without having the application that created the original document. The only software requirement for any user is the Adobe Reader. Meanwhile, our Document Control and Security services add a layer of control and security at the document level, that govern the usage of a document by the proper recipients over the life of the document. Which is to say, the security safeguards travel with the document itself. So you can better protect your intellectual property, maintain confidentiality and enforce the privacy requirements of your customers and constituents. Finally, our Process Management Services are what enable Intelligent Documents to automatically “round-trip” data; to capture it from both within and beyond the firewall and route and return that data back to the organization and to your back office systems, all without any human intervention. In other words, no re-keying, no manual processes, no time-wasting work-arounds.
