3 Introduction  This text is intended for students beginning the study of mechanical engineering design. The focus is on blending fundamental development of concepts with the practical specifications of components. Students of this text should find that it inherently directs them into familiarity with both the basis for decisions and the standards. For this reason, as the students transfer to practicing engineers, they will find that this text is indispensable as a reference text. The objectives of the text are to: 1. Cover the basics of machine design, including the design process, engineering mechanics and materials, failure prevention under static and variable loading, and characteristics of the principal types of mechanical elements. 2. Offer a practical approach to the subject through a wide range of real-world applications and examples. 3. Encourage students to link design and analysis. 4. Encourage students to link fundamental concepts with practical component specifications.

5 Chapter (1) Design Process 1.1 The Procedure of Design
The process of design of mechanical systems or machines consists of a few steps to be followed in order: 1. Recognition: - Recognition the need. - Description of problem statement. 2. Synthesis - Identifying all possible solutions and making a list. - Selecting mechanism or mechanisms for analysis of motions and forces. 3. Calculations - Select Material - Determine permissible values of forces or stresses - Determine Sizes and dimensions

6 4. Revision and Modification
The results of calculations are checked against information from the relevant source or sources. The results of calculations Should fit to standards The dimension may be modified to suit standards- Check availability of material in certain sizes and shapes Standards are available from professional institutions, organizations and manufactures of standard elements. 5. Report The mechanical designs are best reported by drawings and standard methods for specifying material and special manufacturing process.
