If you click on at the top of the screen, you can go directly to the page. “Marita’s Bargain” begins on page 3.

3 re-read lines of “Marita’s Bargain,” which recount the “bargain” Marita has made. Then open up a document and complete one of the options below:

4 For the teacher Based on prior assessment of students’ knowledge of structural elements and group dynamics, place students into “expert” groups for aJigsaw discussion. Give each group a set of lines to re-read. Groups will determine what structural element is found in their selection(s), why Gladwell chose to use that particular strategy, and how it contributed to his overall argument. The teacher may provide students with the type of element present (description: 1-52; , compare/contrast: , integration of data tables: , anecdote: ) based on an informal assessment of the students' understanding of structural elements. If students struggle with close reading, direct them to view the “Close Read Screencasts” on pg. 6 and pg. 13 of the Collections  Grade 12 digital textbook.  Instruct students to discuss their assigned passage(s) with their expert groups. Once students have determined the structural element and/or investigated Gladwell’s inclusion of the strategy and how it contributed to his overall argument, students should return to “home” groups.

5 After your group discussion, answer these questions
What is Gladwell’s argument in “Marita’s Bargain”? How does Gladwell use description, compare/contrast, data tables, and anecdotes to shape his argument? What other structural elements are present in the essay and to what extent are they effective? Why did Gladwell choose a variety of structural elements when composing “Marita’s Bargain”?

6 What is Gladwell’s Definition of Success?
How do you define success?

7 Which structural element (description, compare/contrast, use of data, anecdote, or something else you located) was most effective in convincing readers to accept Gladwell’s argument that students of a low socioeconomic status can benefit greatly from KIPP schools? OR success can only be gained through hard work and dedication to a goal?
