1 8.4 Analyze the causes and consequences of the resurgence of the conservative movement, including social and cultural changes of the 1960s and 1970s, Supreme Court decisions on integration and abortion, the economic and social policies of the Reagan administration, and the role of the media.

2 Conservatism vs. Liberalism
-have been in conflict throughout the history of the US -More noticeable during times of great social and cultural change and economic uncertainty -1920s -1930s (Depression) -1960s (Hippie movement and Vietnam) -1970s (End of Vietnam and Sexual Revolution)

3 The conflict continues today
***What does it mean if your on the Right? Means you’re a Conservative (Republican) If your on the Left? Means you’re a Liberal (Democrat)

4 CONSERVATIVE BELIEFS:
*That a large federal gov. threatens individual liberties *That the majority of governing should be left to the states (states rights) *Believe in personal responsibility (gov. should leave charity to the private sector) -they do not support the extension of the welfare state because they believe that welfare programs make their recipients permanently dependent on government and are too costly

5 LIBERAL BELIEFS: *Believe that the federal gov. should take an active role in protecting the rights and welfare of the individual and of minority groups against local prejudices *Advocate gov. programs to aid those who are least able to care for themselves

6 Events of the 1960s fostered the social conservative movement
-The women’s rights movement challenged the status quo and conservative ideals about the role of women in society -Supreme Court decision that state laws that criminalized abortion violated a woman’s right to privacy (Roe v. Wade 1973) outraged some conservatives and started the “right to life” movement -How would Conservatives have differed from Liberals on this?

7 Sandra Day O’Connor A conservative
***President Reagan ( ) named the first woman to the Supreme Court Sandra Day O’Connor A conservative

8 Conservatives were outraged by the protesting of Vietnam
Pictures of peace marches and the burning of draft cards did not go over well The fall of Vietnam to communism in 1975 intensified the fear that America was losing its place as a world leader Drug use, the divorce rate, and the # of unmarried people living together climbed….conservatives claimed “family values” were under attack

9 1976 Democrat Jimmy Carter is elected President
Carter Administration was plagued by economic problems….double digit inflation and an energy crisis Carter was unable to end the Iran hostage crisis

10

11 ***1980 Republican Ronald Reagan elected
Hostages freed in Iran the day Reagan sworn in (TV covered this) This added to Reagan’s “can-do” image ***REAGAN REVOLUTION: -cut taxes for the wealthy to promote investment and the creation of jobs -Cut gov. spending at the same time ***CALLED “Reaganomics”

12 Believe that if the wealthy have more $ then prosperity will “trickle down” to the rest of society
The rich would invest in building factories and hiring workers This is the BELIEF OF A FISCAL CONSERVATIVE

13 Liberal opponents view of Reaganomics:
-Liberals believe that the economic being of the nation depends on the ability of all the people to consume the goods produced -Increased demand will prompt entrepreneurs to create more jobs and more people with jobs will spend more $ -Believe that the wealthy should pay taxes in proportion to their ability to pay -***Believe that tax cuts should go to the lower and middle class who will use those funds to consume goods prompting investment, jobs and prosperity

14 Conservatives…belt-tightening and balanced budgets
Liberals believe in economic hard times the federal gov. should stimulate the economy through deficit spending Conservatives…belt-tightening and balanced budgets

15

16

17 Reagan administration also limited the enforcement of regulations on businesses and banks
-DEREGULATION -Conservatives believe regulation of businesses constrains the free enterprise system -Limited the enforcement of environmental protections (jobs are more important) -Took a hardline against the Soviet Union and increased Cold War spending

18 Reaganomics still debated today
-Yearly budget deficits due to increased defense spending contributed to the tripling of the national debt -Failure of many deregulated financial institutions led to the need for massive bailouts that further added to the debt and the crisis in economic confidence in the 1980s and again in Neither liberals or conservatives addressed the increasing exodus of manufacturing jobs to places where labor costs were lower

19 New jobs created were in low paying service industries
-Low wages and Reagan’s tax policy contributed to the widening gap between the rich and the poor -Reagan helped change political vocabulary: Conservatism now seen as synonymous with economic growth and traditional values Liberalism now seen as wasteful spending and too big of a government Liberals tried to counter this by portraying themselves as champions of the middle class and the role of gov. as protecting the middle class
