Observation of Broadband Ultraviolet Emissions From Hg3*
Laboratory for Optical Physics and Engineering Observation of Broadband Ultraviolet Emissions From Hg3* Wenting Wendy Chen, Thomas C. Galvin, J. Gary Eden June 21, 2016

Abstract Two previously-unobserved emission continua, peaking at ∼ 380 nm and ∼ 273 nm, have been observed when Hg vapor is photoexcited at 248 nm (KrF laser). Comparisons of the observed spectra with theory[1] suggest that the observed continua are the result of transitions between pairs of electronic states having a triangular (C2v) configuration. [1] H. 7 Theoretical and Experimental Spectra

380 nm and 485 nm Waveforms

380 nm Decay Rates

Fitting of 380 nm Decay Rates

520 nm Decay Rates

273 nm Waveform

Conclusions New emission transition continuum bands centered at ∼ 380 nm and ∼ 273 nm were observed for the first time when Hg vapor is photoexcited at 248 nm. Comparisons with theoretical predictions suggest these continua are unobserved Hg3 bands.
