Chapter 2 Labs Set-up Lab 1 Lab 2 Set-up:
To investigate how living cells regulate pH, you will be using water and a homogenate and acid and base. The homogenate, made from cells (plant or animal) that were recently living, will model the internal environment of a living organism and it’s response to change. Dependent variable: pH Lab 2 Heating Curve of water: When a system is heated, energy is transferred into it. In response to the energy it receives, the system changes, for example by increasing its temperature. A plot of the temperature versus time is called the heating curve. The rate of temperature increase will be dependent on the heat capacity of the system. When the heat capacity is large, the temperature increases slowly, because much energy is required to increase its temperature by one degree. Thus, the slope of temperature increase is different for the solid, liquid, and gases states & for salt water, sugar water, and distilled water. Independent Variable: salt water, sugar water, distilled water Dependent Variable: Temperature over time One constant: 30 second time intervals for at least 15 minutes Set-up: Question, hypothesis (if…then…because…), constants, control, independent/dependent variables, data tables
