SCCS and Rape Anthro 174AW Amanda McDonald

2 Original Hypothesis and Independent Variables
Hypothesis: I believe that modernization, the form of family, segregation of adolescent boys and a lack of affection received by young boys from their mothers causes an increased rate of rape a in society. 52. NON-MATERNAL RELATIONSHIPS, EARLY CHILDHOOD  68. FORM OF FAMILY 173. RAPE 174. FREQUENCY OF RAPE 175. MALE SEXUAL AGGRESSIVENESS 242. SEGREGATION OF ADOLESCENT BOYS 298. Aggression: Early Boy 300. Aggression: Late Boy Original Hypothesis and Independent Variables

3 Results for xUR Unrestricted Model
(The list of variables in the Unrestricted model is very long, but none are significant) R2:final model R2:IV(distance) R2:IV(language) > ccc Fstat df pvalue RESET Wald on restrs NCV Wnormal lagll lagdd No significant results from these independent variables, so I scrapped my hypothesis and looked for some research and articles to develop a new hypothesis and find new independent variables and I came across Peggy Sanday’s article, “The Socio-Cultural Context of Rape: A Cross Cultural Study.” Results for xUR Unrestricted Model

4 Peggy Sanday Article on Cultural Study of Rape
Peggy’s paper focuses on the incidence, meaning and function of rape in tribal societies with the hypotheses that rape incidences vary cross culturally and a high incidence of rape is embedded into different cultural configurations than low incidences of rape. 664. Ideology of Male Toughness 666. Moderate or Frequent Interpersonal Violence Peggy Sanday Article on Cultural Study of Rape

5 I turned my focus to comparing the results from Sanday’s paper from with the results I gained from running the same independent variables she used again with more updated information in the SCCS to see what results were produced this time. New Ideas/Hypothesis

6 Restricted Model xR Results
bbb 2SLS model for rape = SCCS$v668 coef Fstat ddf pvalue VIF (Intercept) NA fydd freintovio ideomaltough > r2 R2:final model R2:IV(distance) R2:IV(language) > ccc Fstat df pvalue RESET Wald on restrs NCV SWnormal lagll lagdd Yay! I now have significant results!!!!! Restricted Model xR Results

7 Analysis of Results for xR
The independent variables Ideology of Male Toughness and Interpersonal Violence, were slightly less significant than Sanday’s results, but still they remained significant. Raiding other groups for wives was significant before being run with the independent variables listed above, after which it became insignificant. Analysis of Results for xR

8 After weeks of frustration and issues with programming and a lack of significant variables, I finally have success!!!! So I plan to use these variables and the results to compare to Sanday’s results and her conclusion, to my new results. I also want to explore why other independent variables did not show any significance and explore the deeper meanings and cultural understandings of rape and further disprove the idea of rape as a “natural” male instinct that must be “overcome.” I want to show how it is actually a cultural construction impacted by the cultural idea that to be masculine one must be “tough” and aggressive and that raping women becomes a way of asserting this “social order.” Where to go from here….

9 drw adds: This is how the indep vars affect rape
How rape is affected (including Galton effects) by 664. Ideology of Male Toughness: rape occurs in 41/46 = 89% of freq. IP violence cases 666. Moderate or Frequent Interpersonal Violence: rape in 37/39 = 95% of freq. IP violence societies Rape Rape - + 664 – p = p =0.0006 (there is also a moderate distance effect & missing data uncertainty that counteracts selection bias in searching for only the significant variables) drw adds: This is how the indep vars affect rape
