2 Overview Murals A mural is any form of painting on a wall or rock surface Public art, meant to be large and seen by the masses In Mexico, Diego Rivera and Jose Orozco were major muralists during the 1920’s and 1930’s Mostly painted on political issues Fill out the Mexican Murals Chart using the following images

3 Tenochtitlán Marketplace by Diego Rivera
This image depicts an Aztec marketplace before the arrival of the Spanish.

4 Conquest by José Orozco
This image depicts Cortez, the Spanish conqueror of the Aztecs.

5 Colonial Domination by Diego Rivera
This image depicts what life was like under the rule of the Spanish.

6 Fight for Liberty by José Orozco
This image depicts Father Hidalgo, who led a revolution against the Spanish.

7 Juárez and the Fall of the Empire by José Orozco
This image depicts Benito Juarez, who led the forces taking back Mexico after the French invaded. He also put in rules granting rights and freedoms to those with native blood, who had been oppressed by those of European descent.

8 History and Perspective of Mexico by Diego Rivera
This image depicts the dictatorship of Porfirio Diaz. He took rights away from the peasants, who were forced to work for little or no wage.

9 The Trench by José Orozco
This image depicts the Mexican Revolution, in which the peasants rose up against the dictatorship of Porfirio Diaz.

10 Land Distribution by Diego Rivera
This image depicts the legacy of the Mexican Revolution. Land was taken from the wealthy and given to the poor after the fighting ended.
