PREP audience need to learn? learning goals? Post-point task? Your goal in class may be for students to engage to learn, to expand on what they know, to express their own ideas or to decide on the next move, but not all at once. Your points will make an organized conversation, that has emotional appeal, provides clear, credible data to support your thesis and leads to a goal. Purposes…Ask: To learn…AHA! For ideas…what if? To agree…yes, and… To decide…Let’s do that.

How can you surprise? Change your rhythm only to make a point. Present it Manage anxiety by greeting it. Anxiety tells you that this is important, you should reply that’s why I practiced it. Practice a lot and then hold off on judging yourself. If you encounter resistance: ask your audience to try to imagine what it would be like if we did this. If they see it as a problem, keep asking why. Ask them what advice they would give.

What kind of advance organizer will help your audience see how everything fits together? Do you want to make this novel and memorable. How can you amplify the signal of your message to cut through the noise in your audience’s minds? How can it be a visual? Do you have the best, clearest, most exciting image? What is a shocking statistic is related to this? How can you contrast what we have now with what could be better? How might you fix a phrase so that it’s easily repeatable? What story can you tell that will stay in peoples’ minds? How can you bring the stakes, the why it matters now home to your audience in the most personal way?
