Warm-Up # /8/12 5) Osmosis and diffusion are examples of what type of transport? 6) What type of transport requires energy?
2
Active Transport Unit 4
3
Active Transport EQ Obj
Why is active transport essential for life on Earth? Obj Differentiate between the four types of active transport
4
Active Transport Cell must move material UP the concentration gradient from areas of low to high. USE OF ENERGY (ATP)!!! Like walking UP a SLIDE
5
How’s it work? Uses carrier proteins
Act as pumps that use energy to move ions and molecules across the membrane Important in maintaining ion concentration in cells
6
Active Transport in Plants
Enables roots to absorb nutrients from the soil Without active transport, nutrients would diffuse out of the roots. Plants get nutrients AGAINST the concentration gradient (against GRAVITY)
7
Bulk Transport of STUFF
Some molecules such as complex proteins are to LARGE to cross the cell membrane Large molecules of food and other substances are packaged in membrane bound sacs called vesicles and moved across the membrane
8
Happens Four Ways Endocytosis Exocytosis Phagocytosis Pinocytosis
9
Endocytosis Cell membrane folds into a POUCH that encloses the particles Pouch pinches off INSIDE the cell to form a vesicle Vesicle releases contents into the cytoplasm
10
Two Types of Endocytosis
Phagocytosis—Cell engulfs a food particle or other cells “CELL EATING” Vesicle fuses with a lysosome How we get rid of bacteria Pinocytosis– Cells engulf liquid/fluid “CELL DRINKING”
11
Exocytosis Opposite of endocytosis
Waste and cell products LEAVE the cell Products made in the cell are packaged in the golgi, and secreted out of the cell “Cell throwing up”
14
Create a Venn Diagram Compare and contrast Passive and Active Transport
