3 Find totals of coins using number facts
Money and Time Find totals of coins using number facts Starter Pairs to 10 Pre-requisite skills – to use this starter, drag this slide to the start of Day 1 Show 10 pegs (e.g. 5 red and 5 blue) on a coat hanger. How can we split 10 into 2 groups? Record suggestions in an ordered list: 10 = 9 + 1, 10 = 8 + 2, etc. Are there any more? Show 8 and 2. Turn the coat hanger round to show Turn the pegs back to show again and then remove the last 2 pegs. What number sentence could we write? Record 10 – 2 = 8. Put the 2 pegs back on. Point to the 8 pegs. What if I took these off instead? What number sentence could we write? Repeat with 6 and 4, creating 10 – 4 and 10 – 6 Year 1

Money and Time Find totals of coins using number facts Starter Count on/back in 10s Simmering skills – to use this starter, drag this slide to the start of Day 3 Use the 100-bead bar to support counting on in 10s from 10 to 100 and back to zero. Point to various multiples of 10 and ask questions such as: What is 70 add 10? What is 10 more than 30? Do we need to move the beads across one at a time? What is 50 take away 10? What is 10 less than 90? Year 1

6 Find totals of coins using number facts
Money and Time Find totals of coins using number facts Objectives Day 1 Find totals to 20p. Year 1

7 Let’s count on the line to check… Let’s use our 0-20p penny line!
Day 1: Find totals to 20p. 12p Who remembered = 20? Let’s count on the line to check… Let’s use our 0-20p penny line! How many hops was that? We’ve marked 12p. How many more pennies do I have to find to make 20p? Is there a number fact that can help me with this problem? Count the extra pennies to check! 12p + 8p = 20p Year 1

8 Day 1: Find totals to 20p. 15p Who remembered 15 + 5 = 20?
Let’s count on the line to check… How many pennies have been marked this time? How many more pennies do I need to make 20p now? How many hops was that? Children can now go on to do differentiated GROUP ACTIVITIES. You can find Hamilton’s group activities in this unit’s TEACHING AND GROUP ACTIVITIES download. WT: Pick a money card and find the complement to 20p. ARE: Listen to 1p coins dropping into a tin; work out the complement to 20p. GD: Listen to 1p or 2p coins dropping into a tin; work out the complement to 20p. 15p + 5p = 20p Count the extra pennies to check! Year 1

9 Year 1 The Practice Sheet on this slide is suitable for most children.
Differentiated PRACTICE WORKSHEETS are available on Hamilton’s website in this unit’s PROCEDURAL FLUENCY box. WT: Make the amounts up to 20p Sheet 1. Use pennies to count out the same amount that they see in the purses, then they count up adding pennies until they get to 20p. ARE: Make the amounts up to 20p Sheet 1. Use a 0-20p line (see resources) to check. GD: Make the amounts up to 20p Sheet 2. Draw the coins you would use to make a total of 20p. Complete the number sentence. Challenge children to make up some of the amounts to 30p. Year 1

11 Day 2: Find totals using number facts.
Year 1

12 Look at the toys and choose two to buy. Add the amounts together.
Day 2: Find totals using number facts. Look at the toys and choose two to buy. Add the amounts together. Encourage children to use number facts that they know, e.g. doubles, number bonds to 10 or 20, or counting on from the larger number. Children write a number sentence on their whiteboards. Choose children to share their addition sentences; scribe them on the board. Ask children to explain the number facts they have used to find totals. Today would be a great day to use a problem-solving investigation – Dicey Coins – as the group activity, which you can find in this unit’s IN-DEPTH INVESTIGATION box on Hamilton’s website. Alternatively, children can now go on to do differentiated GROUP ACTIVITIES. You can find Hamilton’s group activities in this unit’s TEACHING AND GROUP ACTIVITIES download. WT: As ARE but with prices lower than 10p. ARE: Pretend-shopping: add two or three amounts, identifying helpful number facts where possible. GD: Target totals using the ‘At the toyshop’ resource sheet. Year 1

13 The Practice Sheet on this slide is suitable for most children.
Differentiated PRACTICE WORKSHEETS are available on Hamilton’s website in this unit’s PROCEDURAL FLUENCY box. WT/ARE: Sports shop Sheet 1. GD: Sports shop Sheet 2. Children look at the sports shop items and add at least five pairs of items, recording as appropriate. Challenge Year 1

14 Find totals of coins using number facts
Money and Time Find totals of coins using number facts Objectives Day 3 Find totals, adding 10 or 20 pence. Year 1

15 Let’s use a 0-£1 penny line! What happens when it gets to 100p?
Day 3: Find totals, adding 10 or 20 pence. +10p +10p 20p 30p 60p 70p Let’s use a 0-£1 penny line! Steps of 10p are shown. What happens when it gets to 100p? Let’s check… Let’s check… 60p + 10p = 70p. 20p + 10p = 30p. Find 20p + 10p Do we need to count on in ones? What should we mark on the penny line? We’ve marked 60p. What is 60p add 10p? Do we need to count on in ones…Who can remember Spider counting on the 100-square? When we are adding 10 we do not need to count on all the numbers in between! What have we done? Year 1

16 Do we need to count on in ones? What should we mark on the penny line?
Day 3: Find totals, adding 10 or 20 pence. +10p +10p 42p 52p 62p Let’s check… What is 42p + 20p ? Do we need to count on in ones? What should we mark on the penny line? First mark on 42p. Then jump two 10s! 42p + 20p = 62p The ones stay the same; it is only the tens that change! Year 1

17 Day 3: Find totals, adding 10 or 20 pence.
Let’s try 24p + 20p. First mark on 24p. Then jump two 10s! 24p + 20p = 44p Year 1

18 Who can figure it out before we check?
Day 3: Find totals, adding 10 or 20 pence. +10p +10p 71p 81p 91p How can we find 71p + 20p? Who can figure it out before we check? First mark on 71p. 71p + 20p = 91p Then jump two 10s! Year 1

19 Let’s try 65p + 20p. Who can explain this one?
Day 3: Find totals, adding 10 or 20 pence. +10p +10p 65p 75p 85p Let’s try 65p + 20p. Who can explain this one? First mark on 65p. Then jump two 10s! 65p + 20p = 85p Children can now go on to do differentiated GROUP ACTIVITIES. You can find Hamilton’s group activities in this unit’s TEACHING AND GROUP ACTIVITIES download. WT: Calculate price increases of 10p or 20p using penny lines. ARE: Calculate price increases of 10p or 20p using penny lines. 20 Year 1 The Practice Sheet on this slide is suitable for most children.
Differentiated PRACTICE WORKSHEETS are available on Hamilton’s website in this unit’s PROCEDURAL FLUENCY box. WT: Adding 10p Sheet 1. Children total each pile of money. They use the money line to mark this, then draw a hop to add 10p to this amount, recording their answers as number sentences. ARE: Adding 20p Sheet 2. Children total each pile of money. They use the money line to mark this and hop along to add 20p to this amount, recording their answers as number sentences. GD: Adding 20p Sheet. Children total each pile of money. They use the money line to mark this and hop along to add 20p to this amount, recording their answers as number sentences. Challenge – Add 30p to some amounts. Year 1

21 Find totals of coins using number facts
Money and Time Find totals of coins using number facts Well Done! You’ve completed this unit. Objectives Day 1 Find totals to 20p. Day 2 Find totals using number facts. Day 3 Find totals, adding 10 or 20 pence. You can now use the Mastery: Reasoning and Problem-Solving questions to assess children’s success across this unit. Go to the next slide. Year 1

22 Problem solving and reasoning questions
Write the missing numbers. 12p = 20p 6p = 20p 13p + 3p + = 20p Add the amounts to write the missing numbers in the table. 14p 6p 9p Choose two amounts and add them. Choose a different two and add them. Choose another two amounts and add them. Add 20p to each price: 30p p p How much was added to 40p to get 70p? Year 1

23 Problem solving and reasoning questions: Answers
Write the missing numbers. 12p + 8p = 20p 6p p = 20p 13p + 3p + 4p = 20p Add the amounts to write the missing numbers in the table. 14p 6p 9p Choose two amounts and add them. Choose a different two and add them. Choose another two amounts and add them. 14p + 6p = 20p, 14p + 9p = 23p and 9p + 6p = 15p are all possible additions. Add 20p to each price: 30p 50p p 70p 80p £1 (or 100p). How much was added to 40p to get 70p? 30p – an answer of 110p suggests a misreading of the question. Year 1
