ATG5 or ATG7 are required for autophagy, which results in the release of free fatty acids (FFA) in neutrophil precursors. FFAs block glycolysis and enter the fatty acid oxidation pathway (FAO) to fuel oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), producing the ATP needed for full neutrophil differentiation, maturation, and functionality.
