2 His mother,” as the Law required.
Despite referring to her in the Gospels as “woman” instead of “mother”, there is no doubt that Jesus was very fond of Mary and that she was a firm believer in Him. On the cross…suffering unspeakable physical, emotional, & spiritual torment; Jesus took the time to “honor His mother,” as the Law required.

3 John 19: 25-27 25 Near the cross of Jesus stood
his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.  26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.”  From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

4 our “spiritual family” supersedes our
An important point to note in our main passage is that Jesus affirms the important idea that our “spiritual family” supersedes our biological family in God’s sight. Jesus’ siblings were not yet believers in Him, so to leave Mary in their care would not go well.

5 Matthew 12: 46-50 46 While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.” 48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?”  Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in Heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

6 -------------------------------------------------------------
Hebrews 2:11 “Both the One who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters.” Galatians 6:10 “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”

7 Why not during His 40-day Resurrection appearances?
Why did Jesus choose this moment to care for the future needs of his widowed mother? Why not earlier at The Last Supper? Why not during His 40-day Resurrection appearances?

8 Jesus was showing us something important about God’s heart towards us: God cares about the details, the “small stuff” and concerns of our daily lives. In essence, Jesus is saying: “Mary, I love you. I care about your future. I’m going to make sure you’re taken care of.”

9 Is He too busy or preoccupied with the redemption of the world
How do you view God? Is He too busy or preoccupied with the redemption of the world to care about the stuff that’s bringing you pain right now? Do you have minor details in your life you would never bring to Him, because He just doesn’t care? Jesus’ words to Mary shows us otherwise.
