Energy Sources
2
How do people use energy resources?
Hot water in your home comes when you use an electric power. Electric heaters and other electric appliances use electric energy to work. Electrical energy come from electrical energy stations. Some energy stations produce electricity by using the energy of falling water, electricity made by this way is called “ Hydroelectric energy”
3
How do people use energy resources?
Most energy stations burn Coal, Oil, or natural gas as a source of energy to produce electricity. Burning these fuels changes their Chemical energy into thermal energy. Thermal energy will be used to change water to steam. The steam ( like falling water in dams) powers the machines that produce electricity.
4
What are renewable and non-renewable resources?
Fossil fuels: The remains or traces of past life found in sedimentary rock. Fossil fuels are fuels that are formed from the remains of once living things, for example coal, oil, and natural gas. It takes millions of years for coal, oil, and natural gas to form.
5
Conservation: using less of a resource to make the supply last longer
Non-renewable energy Resources: When supplies are used up, there will be no more. This is why coal, oil, and natural gas are called non-renewable resources. Resource: any material that can be used to satisfy a need. non-renewable resources: a resource that , once used up, cannot be replaced within a reasonable amount of time. Conservation: using less of a resource to make the supply last longer Or you can switch to resources that won’t run out!!
6
These are called fossil fuels.
Remember: Coal, petroleum, and natural gas are considered non-renewable because they can not be replenished in a short period of time. These are called fossil fuels.
7
How Fossil Fuels Work Burn fuel> heat water to make steam> steam turns turbine>turbine turns generator>electrical power sent around the country
