Geographical facts about St Vincent
St Vincent is the main island with a chain of small islands, but only 9 are inhabited St Vincent is 26km (16m) long, 15km (9.3m) wide, The island is 344 sq km (133 sq miles) (Devon is 6707 sq km (2590 sq miles)) St Vincent lies in what is know as ‘Hurricane Alley’ The population is about 109,643 people The population density is high, over 300 inhabitants / sq. kilometre ( It is 177 in Devon, mostly in S, SE and NW) The capital and main port is Kingstown St Vincent is volcanic, with little flat land; W (windward) side is very rocky, E (leeward) side has sandy beaches and bays La Soufrière volcano is the highest peak 1234 metres It last erupted in 1979

Volcanic Disaster La Soufrière volcano erupted in 1812. It erupted again in April Although no one was killed, thousands were evacuated and there was extensive agricultural damage.

Venezuela St Vincent is in ‘Hurricane Alley. This is a satellite of a hurricane in the Caribbean. It shows the clouds swirling round. The very strong winds cause immense damage on the land below.

The hurricane seasons were also particularly active in 1998 and 1999.
Disasters In 1980 and 1987 hurricanes damaged many banana and coconut plantations. The hurricane seasons were also particularly active in 1998 and 1999. Hurricane Lenny in 1998 caused extensive damage to the west coast of the island. Black Sigatoka disease, that affects bananas, is a present day disaster.

Climate of St Vincent : Tropical, hot and humid all the year round, with 2 seasons: Season 1 January – mid-April: relatively cool and dry Season 2 June – December: hot, humid and rainy (called the rainy season) In season NE trade winds, typical of tropical climates, blow steadily with moderate intensity Between 1 & 2 - mid-April-late May, temperature and frequency of downpours increase In season winds more irregular, with some breaks
