1 Ms. Sample’s class notes for “Ain’t I a Woman” by Sojourner Truth
Ad hominem-1) an appeal to the audience’s prejudices, or 2) an attack of the opponents character rather than their argument. Syllogism-a form of deductive reasoning where two valid premises should result in a valid conclusion. Example: All trees have leaves, leaves produce chlorophyl, therefore trees need chlorophyl. If one of the premises is too broad or inaccurate, the conclusion will be inaccurate. Example: All men have hair, Sabrina has hair, therefore Sabrina is a man. Rhetorical Triangle-the relationship between audience, speaker, and purpose. Also find in “Ain’t I a Woman”—two biblical allusions, a rhetorical question used as a refrain, and notice the use of colloquial language.
