Reporting Development Group
Developing Improved Approaches to Reporting Reporting Development Group KEY AIMS include: review and improve the current process of reporting learners’ progress and achievement to parents/carers; identify clear and continuous ways of sharing information of learners’ progress and achievement; support the assessment partnership between learners, teachers and parents/carers; enable parents/carers to gain a greater understanding of the learning, assessment and reporting process. Link this to your last slide/(s) ie why do you feel you wish to improve the process in your school? Why it would be relevant or beneficial for your school to be part of the group. 2-4 Perhaps give examples of things you are already doing that match/reflect the aims of the group.

Developing Improved Approaches to Reporting Background information
Year 3 Growing focus on developing learners’ understanding of their own progress. Increased parental involvement in their children’s learning. National guidelines for teachers. ‘CfE Working Group on Tackling Bureaucracy’ paper. (Nov 2013) Local development priority identifying need to improve current reporting procedures. Feedback from National Parent Forum Scotland. (NPFS) This slide is to help you understand why the development group was established. This is the second year of development. Huge increase in number of schools opting in. (6 last session) Naturally evolving educational development includes developing learner and parental engagement Work of the group is informed and supported by National Guidelines (Education Scotland) Heed is, and has to be, taken of Tackling Bureaucracy Working group Long term need to improve current, traditional reporting process NPFS has also been a driver. We’ve found that their points mirror that of many of our parents too.

National guidelines for teachers
Developing Improved Approaches to Reporting National guidelines for teachers Education authorities will have flexibility within clear national expectations to determine the ways in which reporting shares children’s and young people’s progress, achievements and needs. As is current practice, the formats of written reports will be decided locally. Reporting comprises a range of activities including: written reports children presenting their learning to parents parents’ consultation meetings ongoing oral discussions Staff should ensure that learners are involved in reporting activities in order to promote learners’ ownership of their learning. BtC 5: A framework for Assessment: recognising achievement, profiling and reporting EXTRACT from BtC 5 Recognising Achievement profiling and reporting NATIONAL GUIDELINES FOR TEACHERS “formats of written reports will be decided locally” Our group is working under the governance of the ECS Services Management Team (SMT) Final recommendations/guidelines will inform the ‘local’ format based on our work. This extract from BtC5 mentions ‘written reports’ among other ways of reporting. ‘written reports’ can be hard or electronic and the content of these will be advised by the criteria in these national guidelines. “The “ range of activities” will be identified on our school’s reporting calendar which we will share with you.”

As a parent/carer, what does this mean for me?
Developing Improved Approaches to Reporting As a parent/carer, what does this mean for me? More informed picture of my child’s progress throughout the school year. Clearly identified termly opportunities to find out about my child’s progress. Greater understanding of the learning process. Increased involvement in my child’s learning. As part of this development group ask, “What will the benefits be for me and my child?” Emphasise strong partnership working with the school.

Developing Improved Approaches to Reporting
Key points to note Traditional style of written report will change but information you receive will continue to improve. The school’s ‘reporting calendar’ will support the process of on-going reporting. Clearly identified opportunities for ‘reporting’ will be timetabled across the session. Ongoing feedback is important. (Parents need to be on board from start of session.) They also need to be regularly reminded that each event on calendar is a formal ‘reporting’ opportunity for them. This helps them understand that there is no need for the traditional report when the time comes as they will already have/have had the information. (NB Curricular levels will still be shared in Term 4 as this is a key transition time) CLPL for staff may be required as this could be a cultural change to the reporting process in some schools. Can be difficult to sustain a change such as this so there is a great need to have a collegiate approach and strong commitment in order for new system to be successful. Important to gather regular, ongoing feedback from all (staff, pupils and parents)
