The Cell Theory

I can describe the cell theory.
Objectives I can describe the cell theory.

Components of the Cell Theory:
All organisms are composed of cells. Cells are the basic unit of structure and organization of life. All cells arise from preexisting cells

Zacharias Janssen 1590 – Spectacle maker in Holland that invented the first compound microscope.

* Robert Hooke English scientist that cut a thin slice of cork and looked at it under his microscope. To him, the cork seemed to be made up of empty little boxes, which he named cells.

* Anton Van Leewenhoek Dutch naturalist who created a very powerful (for the time period) single lens microscope. He discovered small animals he called animalcules, or little animals (protists),and also discovered bacteria while examining scraping of plaque from his teeth.

Robert Brown 1833 – He was a Scottish botanist who discovered the nucleus in plant cells and suggested its importance in cell creation.

* Matthias Schleiden German botanist who determined plants are composed of cells. Believed in free cell formation or Spontaneous Generation.

* Theodor Schwann German physiologist and histologist who concluded that not just plant tissues, but animal tissues, are composed of one or more cells. He identified the cell as the basic unit for all organisms.

Robert Remak A Polish/German embryologist, physiologist and neurologist. Based on his observations of embryos, stated that cells come from other living cells. He did not widely publicize this and Rudolf Virchow was given credit.

* Rudolph Virchow A doctor who stated that all living cells come from other living cells (part 3 of the cell theory).

Cell Theory A Theory resulting from many scientists’ observations and conclusions The development of the cell theory is built upon previous knowledge and use of increasingly more sophisticated technology.

Application of the Cell Theory:
Concept 1: A panda bear is made up of many cells. Concept 3: All panda bears cells came from a single living cell. They divide and grow to replace old dead cells. Concept 2: Different cells in the panda bears body do different jobs. Example – fat cells provide insulation and energy.
