1 Explanatory Essay Assignments, November 27-29, 2018
Period 2, AC ELA

2 Think/Pair/Share 11/27/18 Write the following question on your notebook paper: What is the role of advertising in the lives of youth? In other words, how does advertising affect or impact young people? Or, what part does advertising play in the lives of kids? Consider the articles we have read in class on this subject, and generate a list of roles that advertising plays in the lives of youth. Now, share your list with a partner and add to your list. Next, share with the class. Add to your list.

3 11/27/18 What are some roles you identified & Discussed? (the list below is what we generated and discussed in class) Deceiving impact Negative – affects emotional & physical well-being Attracts youth with cartoons and fancy colors making them want to buy more things, food…. Persuasive Controlling Teaches kids not to save money – not financially responsible Increased over the years Affects relationship with parents – kids have more of a say in what parents buy as more and more ads are on the internet – kids keep asking over and over Can make kids bias Affects moral character

4 Which roles interest you the most
11/27/18 You should now have a list of at least 7 to 8 roles that advertising plays in the lives of young people. Think about which roles interest you the most. Which advertising roles to do you think are the most important or impactful roles on the lives of young people? Choose two roles and circle them. These two roles will be the focus of your essay.

5 Identify Supporting details
11/27/18 Now you must re-read and scan the articles we have read in class to record supporting details for each role you identified as important. You are to identify significant facts and statistics that would provide convincing supporting details for each role you identified about advertising in the lives of young people.

6 For example, if you wanted to support the assertion that advertising targets young people, these stats/facts  would help prove your point: 11/27/18 “According to a leading expert on branding, 80 percent of all global brands now deploy a ‘tween strategy.'” (from “Facts About Marketing to Children”) “…food corporations who spend roughly two billion dollars a year on ads specifically targeting children and teens—ads telling kids what’s cool to eat.” (from “Myth of Choice: How Junk Food Marketers Target Our Kids” video) “In a study commissioned by Defy Media, 63% of respondents aged between said that they would try a brand or a product recommended by a YouTube content creator, whereas only 48% mentioned the same about a movie or TV star. Businesses are taking notice and turning more to common folk than mainstream celebrities to reach millennials.” (from “Why YouTube Stars Influence Millennials More Than Traditional Celebrities” article in Forbes)

7 11/27/18 Developing your supporting details. Start taking notes on your own paper. Advertising Role #1 in the Lives of Youth Supporting Detail #1 (include title of article & quote – direct or paraphrase) Body Paragraph #1 Supporting Detail #2 (include title of article & quote – direct or paraphrase) Supporting Detail #3 (include title of article & quote – direct or paraphrase)

8 11/27/18 Developing your supporting details. Start taking notes on your own paper. Advertising Role #2 in the Lives of Youth Supporting Detail #1 (include title of article & quote – direct or paraphrase) Body Paragraph #2 Supporting Detail #2 (include title of article & quote – direct or paraphrase) Supporting Detail #3 (include title of article & quote – direct or paraphrase)

9 Explanatory Essay Organization
11/27/18 Your essay will be four paragraphs. Introduction Body Paragraph #1 (the subject of this paragraph is one of the advertising roles that you identified as important in the lives of young people) Body Paragraph #2 (the subject of this paragraph is one of the advertising roles that you identified as important in the lives of young people) Conclusion

10 Task 1: Write Your “working thesis (claim) statement”
11/28/18 Task 1: Write Your “working thesis (claim) statement” A working thesis statement is a version of your thesis statement that may not be perfect and polished but DOES accurately articulate the topic of your essay. Choose two “roles of advertising in the lives of youth” you feel are compelling/important AND that you know you can support with facts, statistics, expert opinions, etc. We wrote these roles as a class. Write your working thesis statement: “Two roles that advertising plays in the lives of youth are ___________________________.” You will go back later and polish this thesis.

11 11/28/18 Task 2: Find your supporting details (facts, statistics, expert opinions, examples) In your Word document, underneath your “working thesis stamen,” type one of the roles you chose. Then, skip several spaces and type the second role you chose. Take your time and find the BEST facts, stats, expert opinions, examples, to support your thesis statement. Copy and paste the research you think you might use into the Word document ALONG WITH A NOTE TELLING WHERE THE INFORMATION WAS FOUND.

12 11/28/18 Please keep in mind… VERY IMPORTANT: Make sure you locate the context for the information. For example, you can’t just copy/paste a sentence that says, “In the survey, 30% of children said….” without also telling WHAT SURVEY you’re referencing. You need AT LEAST THREE supporting details for each of the roles of advertising you plan to explain in your essay.

13 Task 3: start formulating the lead for your essay
11/28/18 Task 3: start formulating the lead for your essay Explanatory leads are different from narrative leads, although some strategies can overlap. Take your time and read through this awesome Prezi outlining several effective explanatory leads.

14 11/29/18 Today’s goals Finish gathering facts, stats, and expert opinions for your body paragraphs. Write your introductory paragraph. If time allows, start drafting your body paragraphs.

15 Sample Introductory paragraph
11/29/18 Sample Introductory paragraph A few days ago, I had the jingle from “Kars for Kids” commercial stuck on repeat in my head. I am not even interested in donating my car to charity, yet I could not stop thinking about the commercial. This an example of how powerful advertising can be, even to young people like me. In fact, advertising plays a major part in the lives of children and teens. Two main roles of advertising in the lives of young people are to influence spending and to manipulate thinking. Lead Bridge Thesis

16 Introductory Paragraph (3-6 sentences)
11/29/18 Introductory Paragraph (3-6 sentences) First, write your lead. (1-4 sentences) Now, a sentence (or two) that BRIDGES the hook to the topic/ give general background info that leads to the thesis statement. (1-2 sentences) End the paragraph with your thesis statement. (1 sentence)

17 Two body paragraphs (7-8 sentences each) each body paragraph should be structured like this:
11/29/18 Write a topic sentence that gives one general answer to your research question. Prove that what you wrote in your topic sentence is true be giving fact/example #1to support paragraph topic (TLQ). (For example, ….) Next, add your own commentary about fact #1 to show why it is important/relevant. Answer: SO WHAT? (This shows…) Now, give another fact/example to support paragraph topic (TLQ). (Another example,…) Add your own commentary about fact/example #2 to show why it is important/relevant. (This is important because…) Now, give a third fact/example to support your paragraph topic (TLQ). (A final example…) Add your own commentary about fact/example #3 to show why it is important/relevant. End with a conclusion sentence that sums up the relevance of the info in the entire paragraph (As you can see, Overall, …) Repeat this structure for the second body paragraph as well.

18 Conclusion paragraph (3-6 sentences)
11/29/18 Conclusion paragraph (3-6 sentences) Begin with a transition phrase letting the reader know you are wrapping things up(finally, in conclusion, on the whole, thus, to conclude, to summarize, to sum up, in summary) Write one sentence that echoes your thesis statement (basically says your thesis again in slightly different words) Leave your reader with a final thought to consider. If you can tie it back to your hook, bonus!
